Cocktail Series: Cosmopolitan

How many shows have you binged watched so far? If you’re planning on starting “Sex and the City” from the top or planning to watch either of the movies, then we have the perfect cocktail for you. We’re bringing you the iconic pink cocktail made famous by these four women navigating their way through New York City. Yes, that’s right. Get ready to learn all about the Cosmopolitan. While the definite history of this pink, vodka-based drink is not confidently known, there are beverages created and modified that led to this cocktail’s television debut. In the 1960s, Ocean Spray was looking for a way to market their cranberry juice to a wider audience. They did so by printing a drink recipe on each carton called “The Harpoon”. This drink consisted of vodka, cranberry juice, and a splash of lime. Who added triple sec to the mix? That fact is not fully agreed upon. It appears bartenders in both Miami Beach and Provincetown, MA, cities well-known for their gay culture, were crafting up their own version of the Cosmo. Bartender at the Odeon in Manhattan, Toby Cecchini is given credit for putting the Cosmo name out there in the big city. Soon, stars like Madonna were seen drinking it at parties, and it became a staple of nights out with Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. Dust off those martini classes and grab vodka, cranberry juice, triple sec, and fresh lime juice. Shake with ice as the “Sex and the City” theme song plays in the background. Pour the pink liquid in your martini glass and garnish with a lemon twist or even an orange peel if you so desire.
