Dark garnet purple in the glass. Nose and palate of ashy blackberry and tarry blueberry. Tannins still recall the aggressiveness of the wine on initial release, but are now allowing what fruit is left to show. It’s possible that his is just in its “dumb” phase right now so feel free to hang on to any bottles you still have and try again in three or four years.

Dark ruby purple glass-clinging color. Blueberry and ash on the nose. Firm tannins and medium plus acidity. Dark berries and ash on the palate. Very nice cool climate example of the variety.

The Petite Syrah by which I judge all other Petite Syrahs. Full-bodied, rich dark berry, tobacco, earthy hints of peppery spice, but soft. Tannins are mild, easy. Deep purple with ruby edges and just a pale hint of oxidation.

Transparent garnet purple in the glass. Nose is very shy, even in the Riedel New World Syrah glass. Surprisingly bland on the palate; soft and silky with no tannins to speak of at all and a feel of overdone malolactic. It's as if Blue Mountain over compensated for the very aggressive 2009 vintage. The lack of even faint blue- or blackberry flavors makes me wonder if this is even the right wine. Totally uncharacteristic.

Excellent. Fruit at first and very smooth. Allowing it to sit for 15 mins makes it even better. Very good.
