HW Estate Grown Lodi Petite Sirah 2015

Deep purple in color with a short purplish rim.

Fruity nose with blackberries, blueberries, sweet plums, light earth, vanilla, licorice, eucalyptus, spices, tobacco, peppercorn, milk chocolates, vegetables, herbs and black pepper.

Full bodied, smooth and creamy, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, cherries, blueberries, wood, earth, vanilla, molasses, medium roast coffee, black pepper, spices, milk chocolates and cola.

Long finish with soft tannins, cherries and spices.

This is a delicious Petite Sirah from Lodi California. Well balanced and fruit forward with nice complexity. Showing a soft and smooth mouthfeel that I did not expect from a Petite Sirah at this age.

An easy drinking, bold and jammy red wine, with high alcohol, so watch out...

Better after 30 minutes in a decanter.

This is a good sipping wine, all by itself or with food. I paired it with Gouda cheese which went perfect together.

Grapes are hand-picked. Aged in American Oak barrels for 10 months.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

Estate Grown Lodi Merlot 2016

Here is my #MerlotThursday for the week.

A very pretty color of dark ruby with a wide reddish/ brick rim.

Fruity nose of blueberries, plums, cherries, peppercorn, oak, light vanilla, licorice, cloves, pencil lead, light vegetables and spices.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with plums, cherries, sweet raspberries, tobacco, spices, wood, vanilla, diet cola, cloves, dark coffee, dark chocolates, herbs, spices and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a very nice Merlot from Lodi, California. Balanced with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel. Tangy and spicy.

Good by itself or with food. Peking now and will be good in the next few years.

Needed an hour in the decanter to open up properly and balance itself out.

The Single Vineyard Merlot has high alcohol, but it is not noticeable, so watch out...

Grapes are hand picked, and aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

15.9% alcohol by volume.

89 points.

HJW Vineyard Riesling 2013

The Herman J. Wiemer vineyard is the oldest site the winery owns. Poor, gravelly soil offers good drainage and serves to limit vine vigor. As one might expect the 2012 HJW Riesling is the most austere, and notably the most acid-driven wine in the lineup. It's nervy, with a kind of twitchy energy, like a doe emerging from a lean winter. Fruit is not the foremost expression; rather there is poise, tension and intensity, along with lime pith, lovely textural minerality punctuated by saline. Sample — 11 years ago
