Clear, medium purple to Ruby appearance. Clean but pronounced aroma of red fruits, slightly jammy, giving way to sweet figs. After some air and some time in the glass a licorice aroma comes through.
Predominantly figs and Black Forest fruits on the palate the sweetness somewhat overcompensated by acidity. A little too much tannins, could do with some more time in the bottle - will be interesting to revisit tomorrow to see how it has developed. Full bodied Aussie take on a classic Rhone blend - clearly a new world wine. Medium finish.
Good wine paired very well with the nicely marbled Australian on the bone rib eye that we had. Also continued to hold up to the blue cheese we paired it to afterwards but the creamy character of the cheese brought out the acidity in the wine. Very interested to see how this tastes when we revisit it a day or two after opening (storing with cork returned in a fridge at 4 degrees C) — 8 years ago
