Efferus Red Rhone Blend
Mid crimson in colour. Blueberry on nose and palate showing the 72% Mataro. Nice pulpy fruit with bitterness. Light to medium bodied. I would prefer to drink this now at 5 years rather than cellar further. A cult Barossa cuvée made by Abel Gibson who makes light and fresh Barossa Shiraz with less oak influence than the norm. Amazingly the lightest empty bottle I have seen compared to the Primitivo which was ridiculously heavy. Had another bottle 42 weeks later on 27th May 2019. Notes of cherry cola on nose and palate with a bitter twist at the finish like Plum skins. Low tannins and low acid - certainly not built for cellaring. Drink now. 1 bottle left.

Aug 4th, 2018Opened with an animale earthy feral aroma which I put down to the 76% Mataro in the blend (also 15% Shiraz and 9% Grenache). Ultra savoury dried fruit earthy flavours. Normally this type of wine is right up my alley but with air the Bandaid note became evident indicating the dreaded Brett yeast spoilage. Drink up or tip out if you have any. Brett will only get worse.

Nov 1st, 2017Mid Crimson. Savoury Aromas of Earth and Horse Manure showing the 76% Mataro component. Reminded me of The Who song, "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncey" except more Medium than Big. Overall Rustic but smooth. We enjoyed it immensely with Southern Italian restaurant food.

Aug 20th, 2016An Australian mataro-based blend that is very old-world styled. Dark fruit, meaty and earthy, yet bright on the acid and tannins. Well done.

Oct 24th, 2015I don't have a lot of Mataros. This was very pleasant. Lots of red and black berries and great grippy tannins. A great steak wine.
