2020 Barolo: Part Two

This update rounds up our Barolo coverage for 2024, the majority of which was published earlier in the year. As usual, my early fall report focuses on wines that were bottled this past summer, along with several emerging estates that are new to our pages. THE 2020 BAROLOS REDUX Readers may want to look back at my article, 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence , published in January 2024, for a blow-by-blow account of the 2020 growing season and wines. My opinion of 2020 has not changed since then. I see 2020 as a very good, if somewhat variable, vintage. There aren’t too many wines that truly ascend into the stratosphere. At the same time, many of the entry-level Barolos, which are increasingly being bottled with village designations, are flat-out delicious and ideal for near to medium-term drinking. It has become common to hear that 2019-2020-2021 are like 1999-2000-2001. That has a ring to it, I must say. If it were only so easy. Serious Nebbiolo lovers will find this comparison overly simple and superficial. The late 1990s and early 2000s were a period where many growers sought to make powerful, concentrated wines through yields that today are considered abnormally low and heavy extractions in the cellar that have pretty much been abandoned. The overwhelming majority of classically leaning producers had given their wines greater finesse than in the past when so many Barolos were massively tannic and unapproachable in their youth, something that is rarely the case today. --Antonio Galloni, 2020 Barolo: Part Two, September 2024 To read even more about the comparisons to previous vintages and the remaining Barolo coverage, check out the full article on Vinous now . Prapò Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Barolo Prapò is a complex, beguiling wine that sizzles with Serralunga nuance. Graphite, scorched earth, lavender, sage, menthol and licorice meld into a core of sepia-toned fruit. This expressive Barolo has a ton to offer. Its mid-weight personality is a bit deceptive, but there is a lot of wine here. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2024)

Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.2

Diego Conterno’s 2020 Barolo is, once again, a terrific wine in its peer group. Deep, fleshy and super-expressive, the 2020 is ready to go. Crushed rose petal, spice, blood orange, menthol and cedar are front and center. Vibrant, fleshy and terrifically balanced, the 2020 is an absolute delight. I loved it. Le Coste di monforte Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2020 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is redolent of iron, game, incense, scorched earth, blood orange, dark fruit and tobacco. A potent, strapping Barolo, the 2020 is certainly not for the timid. It offers tons of Monforte power, brawn and muscle. A few years in the cellar is an absolute must. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2024)

Barolo del Comune di Monforte'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba is a very serious wine. Deeply pitched notes of balsamic, menthol, licorice, spice, chocolate and blackberry soar out of the glass. A wine of depth and textural drive, the 2020 captures tons of Monforte character. Soft tannins (for a young Barolo) make the 2020 surprisingly—I should say shockingly—accessible. What a wine!
