Languedoc Syrah Grenache 2015

Deep ruby in color; prunes, black cherries, and mushrooms on the nose; medium acidity; medium tannins; tastes like stewed plums, overripe blackberries, and wet gravel with a long finish. Tastes like there was a little Brettanomyces during the fermentation. Not enough to get a barnyard flavor or smell, but enough to make it earthy and mushroom-y. It's good, but not my favorite. A very interesting wine.

After some time in the glass, it has developed aromas of chocolate, prunes, and dried herbs. It tastes like cloves and cherries. The other flavors and aromas are so there, but more in balance now. Adding another point to my score.

Éxilé Rosé Pétillant Gamay

Salmon pink in the glass. A vibrant periwinkle.

Hay and strawberries, creamsicle, saffron milk.

Super gamay. White cherries, dark fruit, cassis, and mineral. Even a bit bready on the afternote.

Idiosyncratic and lovely.

I don’t normally drink white wine, bit this one was surprisingly delicious. Crisp and light. — 3 months ago

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2026

Maybe it bit too full bodied for my taste, but it easily balanced itself with acidity. A fine production. — a month ago

Les 1er Ponts Pinot Noir 2019

My notes were short on this. Quite natty (reduction). Red-fruited. Spice. Some underlying minerality and bright acidity. Good energy, but I didn’t linger much on this wine. There were better ones to drink on the table. — 2 months ago

Le Rouvre Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2018

Just what I want in a Crozes. So earthy and mineral on the nose. Just wafting out of the glass with dirty crushed granite and feral scents. Some rich blackberry fruit and dried beef too. Broad and very open on the palate. Rich savory flavors all over the place. Some tannin provides a bit of scaffolding, but this is all about now. (I sometimes refer to a good Crozes as “slutty” Syrah, but I probably should avoid terms that have historically been used disparagingly, even though I mean it in a good way!) — 4 months ago
