Campolive Superiore Barbera d'Alba Barbera 2015

LP 3 from the Gurdjieff/ de Hartmann box set and a spectacular Barbera. The music is a collection of beautiful piano compositions based on the spiritual teachings of George Gurdjieff. The wine has all the juicy pleasure one expects from Barbera, but has plenty of structure as well. Tannins add some texture & the acidic lift adds complexity to the wine. I absolutely love Barbera, and this is a top level example. — a year ago

Sudtirol Alto Adige Pinot Nero 2015

After the excellent Hartmann Lagein a few days ago, I was hoping for a bit less wood. But this has good energy and balance overall. — 3 months ago

Donà Noir Pinot Noir Lagrein 2007

Blind, I said this could be Volnay, which shows how much I know. It's great Pinot noir in any case. Light, lean and impactful. — 5 years ago

I love Lagrein - reading Matt Kramer’s wine book introduced me to this rare and excellent wine.

@Vasanth Balakrishnan Thanks for the comment. I’m a huge Matt Kramer fan myself. Which book? Does he recommend specific producers?

@Chris MacLean It’s “Matt Kramer on Wine” - highly recommended. He cites in the 2006 article Steinraffler Lagrein Alto Adige as the best. Looks like the 2013 continues to be well-regarded and a relative bargain at around $47. Kupelweiser is the most accessible for me locally at Total Wine and it’s excellent, search for my review here in Delectable.

Surprisingly earthy and complex for an Italian Pinot Noir. Not sure I’ve had a better one. — 3 years ago
