Grand Reserve Lot# 96 Chalk Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Chalk Hill opens with aromas of spiced plums, jam and oak. The palate is dark and soft at the same time and very approachable for such a young wine (2018). Flavors of black and red fruits lead to soft spice and velvety tannins. The finish is long and smooth with lingering fruit. A very nice, approachable wine for $12.99. — 6 days ago

Reserve Lot# 195 Red Hills Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Raising a glass to the original Trader Joe, who passed recently. (Hope we aren’t about to meet you on the other side, brother; #Corona.) Sampled this in-store and it’s a TJs wine find, for sure. The logo on the label would make anyone a bit sheepish to open this outside of one’s home (it’s the ideal wine for social distancing, in that respect). But if you frequent the wine racks at Trader Joe’s, like I do, you know that there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Rich, bright but mellow tannins. Plum. Dry. As good as anything coming out of Napa on a more respectable label at 30-40 bones. — 15 days ago

Reserve Meritage Lot# 184 Napa Valley Red Blend 2017

Color is pretty deep with a mix of purple red and bloody grapefruit. Nose of spice, vanilla, strawberry, cherry jam, strength of alcohol. The nose is pretty decent with strawberry note quite prominent. Taste of ample acidity, vanilla, dark fruits, slightly peppery, slightly sweet, good amount of tannins, and a bit mineral. Feels like Syrah dominant. Aftertaste is a bit short. On par. With this price tag, pretty good. — a month ago

Petit Reserve Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Today I’m trying a new “petit reserve” from Sonoma County. The nose is remarkably California meets Sancerre with notes of dry lemon citrus along with touches of fresh cut grass and wet stone. The palate is very dry and crisp with only the slightest kiss of fruit. Lemon and lime zest flavors lead to lots of minerality and very soft acidity. The finish is long, dry and zesty with continued notes of dry citrus oils. If you like a very dry Sauvignon Blanc this is a steal at $6.99. I know I’ll be getting more! — 18 days ago
