Collares Ramisco 2013

I cannot describe how excited I’ve been for this bottle.

From Portugal’s tiny Colares wine region, this is the famed Ramisco grape, grown in vines in the sands off the coast of Sintra. Back when phylloxera destroyed most of Europe’s grapevines, these survived as the parasite couldn’t make its way in the sands the grapevines grew in. The Portuguese crown then nationalized the wine- unique to Portugal- and used it in diplomacy as a form of soft power.

The wine starts with a roughness that smooths into a beautiful, medium bodied flavour of black cherry and blackberry. Think of a juicy California Pinot Noir that manages the punch of a Rioja.

A wine worthy of its great history.

Dow's

Vintage Porto 1991

1991. Decanted. Much better after 24 hours of air and still singing after 48 hours. I got raisins, dried cherry, a lot of orange peel, fresh herbs, some wood, a bit of cigar, but I was truly surprised by the citrus I got in each visit. Really loved this. Definitely let it air for a day at this point. — 6 days ago

This is not my It is never my favorite port style, but it's very drinkable as a dessert wine.

I enjoyed the nose more than the palate.

Vintage Port Blend 2016

My 4th spin with this vintage and it's holding steady, if a little more reserved than it was in youth. The 16s were super open and drinkable young but have added more of what you'd expect in it's youth, more structure, more density, just more serious. Decant if having right away. If you can plan it, splash decant briefly and rebottle it with the cork open for 24 hours. — 12 days ago

Vintage Port Blend 1994

1994 vintage. Well-crofted indeed. The nose is rather discrete initially. Still a lot of fruit in the mouth, with fresh acidity and silky tannin. While it does not have the depth and power of Taylor's and Fonseca in this extraordinary vintage, there is a lot to like. Give it time to open up. — 24 days ago
