Sugar Cane

Château Coutet

Sauternes-Barsac Sémillon Blend 2010

Forgot to save my thorough notes(!!!). From memory - the nose hits you with overt apricot, fresh figs, lots of nuts (including pistachio ice cream), and a bit of faint tangerine. It tastes like a pastry - almonds, sugar, coconut cream, apricot, cookies and cakes and dessert oh my. Finished with honeycomb. Very different than the Sauternes I am accustomed to, but very good. 93. — 20 days ago

Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2007

Shay A

Last of a 3-pack I bought a few years ago. Should have bought more! Thankfully the ridiculous pricing for the 2008 keeps this 2007 an easy choice when looking for more great champagne.

Having had the 2006, 2007 and 2008 all within the last 6 months or so, it’s fun to see the differences. 2006 seems to be a bigger champagne in regards to richness, yet still has great structure…2008 is wound up crazy tight, extremely chiseled and age worthy…the 2007 is a more accessible version of the three with lots of similarities to 2006.

Right down the middle in terms of style (doesn’t come across reductive or oxidative in profile). Tart lemon, yeasty, chalk, and a hint of nuttiness on the nose. Comtes always has this kiss of freshly baked lemon scone note on the nose to me. Not as multidimensional as 2006, but tons of layers here both aromatically and on the palate. Continuously evolving revealing limestone, powder sugar dusted lemon bars, and roasted almonds. Lemon-lime mineral grip isn’t as prevalent as the 2008 on the finish. This can certainly age, but with how good it is now, pop and enjoy!

Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Blend 1999

Magical Dom for beach weekend in Phuket. Bottle was a little concerning as the cork came out a bit too easily and no pschttt. However the nose revealed right away that this was going to be special. Almost toffee and brioche notes on both the nose and the palate. Classy, complex with caramel and burned sugar notes, but almost weightless. Will remember this one for a while — a year ago

Château d'Yquem

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2011

Bright golden color. Honey, fig and almond on the nose. Creamy full bodied wine with tart finish, and a full syrupy mouthfeel but closer to creamy. Pear, apricot, lime and honey nectar flavors. Really complex with the appropriate amount of sugar. — 25 days ago

Château Climens

Barsac 1er Cru Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2005

Delectable Wine

The 2005 Climens has an intense nose, dried honey and a touch of glycerine, tangerine and barley sugar. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, tangy marmalade mixed with white peach and white pepper, gaining momentum towards the finish that has real depth and penetration. This is a fabulous Climens with great complexity. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. (Neal Martin, Vinous, August 2022)

Les Tuffeaux Montlouis-sur-Loire Chenin Blanc 2018

$35. And well balanced acid and sugar as one would expect from a first rate Loire producer, essentially a Vouvray — a year ago

The Fableist

Cane and Fable 395 Paso Robles Merlot

Very nice! Dark Berry fruit aroma. The berry continues with the flavor along with a cherry finish. Went nicely with Penna, Italian sausage and eggplant marinara. — 3 months ago

Chateau Suduirat

1er Cru Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2005

Dark color. Nose: dark honey. Overripe pineapple. Vanilla. A little caramel. Taste: caramel, butterscotch. Tree sap. Mild bitter orange. Milk chocolate. Maple syrup, coconut sugar. Dried flowers. I miss the freshness of young Sauternes - but wow. 95.
