Scarlet Path

Château Mouton Rothschild

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1988

Boxing day treat with the wife. Pretty much the quintessential "claret." Maybe slightly faded now and on a slow path away from excellent but still lots to enjoy and i love drinking a wine with some history! Had the Lafite from the same vintage and that was slightly more my taste. Paired amazing with roast pheasant. — a year ago

E. Guigal

La Turque Côte-Rôtie Syrah 1989

Deep scarlet color. Almost opaque. Exotic nose. Notes of black fruit, blueberries, slate stone, some menthol and some cranberry. Tight at first but with 4 hours of air this blossomed. Very rich. Finish last forever. But the nose on this thing is@most memorable. Great juice! — 3 years ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Scarlet tawny with mostly clear rims. Barely translucent in the center. Impactful and exciting nose. Notes of black cherries, blueberries, cracked walnuts, cut Cuban cigar, some dry brush and a little camphor. Smooth in the mouth. The nose is so floral, which makes up for some fading fruit in the finish. I think this bottle was slightly past its peak given the drying fruit posture, but the nose and scents make up for it. — 4 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1959

Dark scarlet color with a deep center. Notes of black cherry, cola, roses, cassis, some spice and a little wood char. Amazing perfume in the nose. Smooth and silky in the mouth. Lots of drama with this one, and many agreed the 59 was better than the 45, the 61 and 82 Latours beside it. Bravo! — 2 years ago

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Bolgheri Red Bordeaux Blend 2004

Popped decanted and poured. Dark scarlet color. Almost opaque. Notes of dark red fruit, some mocha and tobacco, some cassis and a nice spice. Great balance of fruit and structure. Tannins mostly resolved. Good finish. Seems to be in a good drinking window. Give it more air than we got. — 3 years ago

FOMO 🤤

Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1985

Bright scarlet color, mostly translucent. Red fruit, gravel stone, spice, dark earth, some tobacco and some leather. Fruit is somewhat faded but still present. I think the 85 LB is moving towards being past peak, but still delivers a nice old world experience. — 2 years ago

Château Calon-Ségur

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Tasted blind. Scarlet tawny color, opaque with thin rims. Nice nose with notes of red fruit, cedar desk, dusty earth, mocha, leather saddle and some spices. Good structure with softened but present tannins. Has a nice richness to it. Guessed 86 Cos. This is better than most previous samples I’ve had of this. — 3 years ago

Chateau Montelena

The Montelena Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Dark scarlet color. Opaque. Nice aged cab nose. Notes of black cherry, plum, leather saddle, herbs, sweet balsamic vinegar and cigar box. Rich and powerful in the mouth. Needed all of its 5 hours of decant time to open up. Very nice but just a slight step below the 90 Cos next to it. — 3 years ago

Best wine they ever made.

Domaine Dujac

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1997

Tasted blind. Bright dark scarlet tawny color. Notes of tart cherry, earth, spice and some wood. Has a bit of a green streak in it, but it doesn’t take away from the quality of the wine. Having had 97 Dujacs many times before, I guess 97 Dujac Clos St. Denis. Someone else nails the CdlR vineyard. Good for the vintage but not at the level of the great old Dujac wines. — 4 years ago
