This wine has a pale yellow color. The most noticeable thing about it is the incredibly fragrant nose, full of apricots, peaches and pears. The palate offers those sweet fruits as well, with the addition of a bit of earthiness wrapped around them. The acidity is brisk and the finish is sweet. Pair it with cheese, or just sip it, because it is a very nice sip. — 16 days ago

At first it reminded me of a Normandy craft cider. Then I poured some in my glass and the colour struck me. It's orangey and clearly turbid. Not your casual chardonnay Sunday evening pour. The nose is verrrryyy complex, pear, apple, honey, elderflower, white pepper, some slight apricot touch and some yeasty notes too (?). The palate is great too, good acid drive, pear and apple, honey, good width, soft mouthfeel that turns into a tannic wall in the rear that caresses the tongue before powering a multi-layered finish with honey, apricot, apple, pear, a savoury, salty touch. Wow this is wild. It's absolutely not the same wine nor the same tastes and varietals but this reminds to some extent of Joly's wines from la Coulée de Serrant. Extremist in the approach somehow. “Bricco Ambrogio” stands alone as the only MGA in the tiny commune of Roddi and it’s almost completely under vine. In fact, the most prominent geological feature in Roddi is the hill of Bricco Ambrogio. While the Lodali family were the first to bottle a single expression, back in the late 1970’s, we largely have Paolo Scavino to thank for the growth of its reputation as a source of depth and balanced Barolo over the last 20+ years.
The 2020 “Bricco Ambrogio” pours a bright, luminous garnet color; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing and predominately red fruited with notes of Morello cherry, cranberry, raspberry, rosebushes, tar, dried green herbs, cedar chest, spices, and gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finishes long, grippy and spicy. A lovely Bricco Ambrogio with beautiful balance and sneaky power; arguably the benchmark for the MGA. Drinking well now in its youth (thank you 2020) but will surely gain complexity after 2030 and deliver smiles through 2040+. — 3 months ago
