The Farm Napa Valley Red Wine 2015

Wow! What a perfect red blend. Very strong fruit flavor due to the 80% cab blend, but a nice medium body and finish due to the 20% cut of savgiovese. The only shame is that this is only available to those in the Peju wine club...good thing I have friends that are in it! — 3 days ago

Plum, cedar on nose. Earthy with dark cherry flavor on palate. Sweet tannins, with hint of vanilla and baking spices on the finish. — 25 days ago

Hebei Xianwang Liquor

Huang Han Jiao

Distillery: Hebei Xianwang Liquor
Name: Huang Han Jiao

Another local from Hebei Province, and another lower alcohol Baijiu (40+ % abv). Like the Shilixiang, on the "sweet" side, but perhaps a little softer and rounder. No musky tones, more a sort of floral fragrance and quite estery. The palate was quite similar to the Shilixiang - rich and melow mid-palate, and finishes sweet with a burn. It'a quite nice, but to be honest, I'd gravitate away from Baijiu after this trip.

Napa Valley Merlot 2015

It's time for #MerlotThursday. Here's a delightful one.

Deep purple in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, blueberries, cherries, spices, cedar, licorice, vanilla, light vegetables, dark coffee, herbs, tobacco leaf, spices, earth and black pepper.

Full bodied and bold with medium plus acidity and nice legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, cedar, leather, earth, vanilla, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, coke, graphite and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very enjoyable Merlot from Napa Valley. Fruit forward, rich and big, with a great mouthfeel and nice complexity.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up and shows the tannins {90 minutes).

Drinking very nicely now and will be better in the next 5 years.

I had it all by itself. So delicious.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

Hebei Sanjing

Shilixiang Baijiu

Distillery: Hebei Sanjing
Name: Shilixiang Baijiu

Fun apparent fact - Baijiu is the most consumed spirit in the world. But gosh... How little does the Western society know of this spirit. It's so difficult to find information on these bottles that are not in Mandarin (in English basically).

This distillery has to be king of the Hebei province (right outside Beijing). Signboards and ads are plastered everywhere with this very nicely branded disillery (love the bottle).

That said, this was pretty good. Alcohol on the lower side (40% abv). Sorghum and wheat based. It's on the "sweeter" side, even on the nose. Smells a touch musky, herbal and quite smooth on the mid-palate, finishes sweet and strong, but not necessarily harsh. Still burns unlike the Shandong Baijiu, but heck... It's Baijiu. It should burn. In my mind, this has sort of a richness, but not quite like Maotai's style and density. Still learning, so forgive the botched notes.
