Mount Palomar

Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A constantly evolving dense and pleasurable wine. Started with heavy blueberry pie, cocoa and cigarbox. Hours later, cedar, star anise, violets and leather. Still an infant. Really well done Sean Capiaux! — 4 days ago

The Other Right

Away With The Pixies Pinot Noir

Jay Blackinton presides over one of the smartest wine lists I’ve seen, and I’ve never gone wrong by letting him take the wheel. Tonight he intro’d me to this unfined & unfiltered Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills, the antithesis of what I assume to be Australian viniculture: a light, juicy, low-alcohol, low-tannin, chilly, gulpable red. Would I have picked this bottle from his insane wine list? No, but as usual Jay has exposed my own charlatanism and turned me on to something genuinely fresh, alive, and boundary-busting. Ochota Barrels

a forest Pinot Noir

Like many I opened a bottle of ochota last week to toast the life of Taras Ochota who passed on Monday. I have long loved the Ochota wines and have felt lucky to have them in the Charleston market, but this “A Forest” Pinot was a gift from afar and one I  have held onto for a year knowing the right time would come to open it. Well, last week seemed perfect time to celebrate a person who was a leader in making natural wines that were vibrant, beautiful, and sound. Any article about Taras and his wife Amber brimmed with their positive energy, and I loved this quote from him that appeared in a Imbibe tribute:

‘We could make more,’ he said to a room full of journalists, sitting round his enormous kitchen table last year. ‘But then I’d have to work harder, and then I wouldn’t be drinking wine with you guys.

‘I just want to make wine and have a nice life.’

Here’s to a life well lived! ❤️

Calera Wine Company

de Villiers Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

Do not pop and pour! Give this a decant. This has improved so much with age. Intense ripe cherries and smoke with a hint of vanilla and some earthy tones on the nose. Soft fruits and sweetness on the palette with dusty soft tannins and uplifting acidity. This is a very nice subtle and gentle wine. — 19 days ago

Elizabeth Hunter Valley Sémillon 2001

I know that this isn't a fancy super expensive wine, but if you are patient to cellar it it will open a door of perception, an insight on the Hunter Valley semillon, it could indeed be a textbook as an aged sample and descriptor of the category.
Lime jelly, macadamia, lanolin, lemongrass, mineral and the more you swirl the more it gives you all in perfect balance. An outstanding performer that very rarely disappoints.
Long and generous.
