Bomb! Imperial Stout

Hard poured this inky octopus to a pattern-bald, latte-afro pate with dancing nematode swirls in space riffs. Sticky cellulite ‘lacing’ painting the glass with stain-stars. Black. Burnt baklava aromas, maple char, black chocolates with windowsill mint, malty dark caramel, baked aromas. Coffee and resinous chocolate, baked maple syrup, poppy torts, rye bread with dark caramel, baked chocolate with ganache for a sleepover, Thai coffee reduction, treacle, a sweet black pepper and sassafras and dark rum sprouting fresh vanilla bean. Intensely variegated, layered, concentrated. The Dagwood of imperial stouts. Piled 6 feet high, enjoy with a friend, horizontally. .

Colheita Porto Port Blend

Toffee and maple aromas stand out in this Colheita. Flavours of biscuit and toasted pecan emerge thereafter. The finish is vaguely like vanilla. — 7 years ago

Machete Petite Sirah Blend 2016

Wow, a Fav! Had another bottle about 7 mos ago. Blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah & Grenache and aged for 10 months on French oak (40% new). A deep red color with aromas of black fruits and sweet spice. On the palate, ripe plums, jammy blueberries and sweet cherry with slight oak and vanilla spice, pours like syrup. Lingering finish, good length allowing the soft tannins to open in your mouth. Good structure, ending with pure fruit and dash of minerality, drinks well now. Produced with 12 different labels. Wow! — 7 years ago

Dow's

Vintage Porto 1985

Little staining, moderate plus to elevated concentration. Bright ruby with a garnet rim. Rosemary, clove, thyme, game, leather, and sanguine. Cinnamon & nutmeg, tea leaves, and a tough of mint. Iodine, agave/syrup on the palate. A prolonged sweet and savory finish of elevated acidity and moderate smooth tannins. — 8 years ago

Château Raymond-Lafon

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 1995

1998 vintage. This estate was acquired in 1972 by former Château Yquem régisseur Pierre Meslier ( who passed away in 2023 at the age of 93). He managed to restore the wines to their former glory, and his 3 children seem to continue on the same path. This 1998 features a brilliant, golden colour, and a nose that immediately shows off the typical roasted botrytis aromas that characterise great Sauternes, intertwined with honey, beewax, maple syrup, lemon confit and flowers. In the mouth, it is succulent and profound, wonderfully achieving that delicate balance between sugar and acidity that makes Sauternes potentially great. Layers of dried and fresh fruit, rich and refreshing at the same time, culminating in a very long finish with a lovely almondy impression. Excellent. Abv. 13,5%. — 2 years ago

Domaine Gourt de Mautens (Jérôme Bressy)

Rasteau Red Rhone Blend 2001

Austere at first, thought maybe the fruit was gone but just needed an hour of air. Consider drinking soonish though. Tastes like lots of Grenache and lots of whole clusters. Leads with leather, animal, dried herbs, coffee grounds and eventually dark red cherries in syrup and cinnamon red hots enter the mix. Clearly from warmer southerly / mediterranean climes but there is still a sense of freshness and acidity here — 6 years ago

Founder's

Barrel Aged Series CBS Imperial Stout 2019

2019 edition. A little thin compared to prior years. Might be due to the relatively weak/disappointing 2019 KBS base. Nevertheless, the bourbon and maple syrup are both present and water nice. The alcohol is well balanced, it doesn't feel hot at all like other imperial stouts. — 7 years ago

Solera 1927 Montilla-Moriles Pedro Ximénez

Surprising wine. Very thick mouth feel, almost like a syrup. Tastes like a cross between a ruby & and tawny Port. Really long finish with chocolate at the end. Nice. — 8 years ago

Apothic

Inferno Red Blend 2020

Inspired by the “Apotheca”, a mysterious place where some of the earliest wine was blended and stored, Apothic wines offers a truly unique wine experience.

A red blend emerges from the flames, creating a most unexpected and masterful encounter.

Paying tribute to a time-honored craft, this wine has been aged for 60 days in whiskey barrels, creating bold notes of red and dark fruit with layers of maple and spice.
