Rocche dei 7 Fratelli Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2019

I wish Barbarescos would come with a back label telling you how tannic the wine is, kind of like Alsace now does the sweetness bar. Many of the less expensive ‘19s are drinking well now, but this one is quite tannic. The nose has nice cherry fruit and a leathery note. It’s got nice flavor intensity and ripeness on the palate, but then the mouth-puckering tannins hit. Needs a few more years. — 4 days ago

Who cares people who can not understand that tannins preserve the wines for 20 years (if the fruit is there)….but it is tough to convince our better half’s…..

@Tom Casagrande, I agree with @Pinotman /// Andreas that expecting most Barolo/Barbaresco to be even barely drinkable within 10 years (for me personally, 20 years) is largely a very tough ask — in fact, what makes Nebbiolo from those regions worth drinking is cellaring them for many years. NOT a personal criticism in any respect, but back in 1985 my brother and I spent 3 nights in Barbaresco drinking and buying super cheap (less than $10) Barbaresco/Barolo from the 1950s (1958, best vintage, 1953 and 1950) and drinking them, they were all incredible. That formed my opinion above, and is why I RARELY buy them any longer, I have a small stash from 1978 to 1985 (30 or so bottles?) that we occasionally open. I kinda believe that if you don’t buy these wines before you’re 40 (or buy older vintages at auction), why bother? Cheers!!!

@Pinotman /// Andreas @Doug Powers - I can understand the more expensive crus having significant tannic structure for a slow unfurling, but it’s the tannic variability of the basic, entry-level bottlings that can be frustrating.

Fratelli Vineyard Fiano 2011

Best domestic Fiano IMHO - rich, elegant, complex. 2011 is so good — wish I had more. — 3 years ago

2021 vintage. Excellent. Right in the zone I like for Barbera or Nebbiolo — 2 months ago

This drink reminds me of an amaro. Sweet and pungent. I had it with coke and it mixed well with some ice. — 7 months ago

Fratelli Barale

Langhe Arneis 1870

In a word, delicious. Fruit forward. Fresh. Pairs well with basically anything and your friends that want a “white wine” will be blown away by the drink ability smoothness and freshness of this great wine. Enjoyed with parm cheese wedges, prosciutto, and some fruits as an appetizer prior to enjoying with bay sea scallops and linguini. I’m very happy I bought 3 bottles. Thank you Astor wines for suggesting it! — 2 years ago

Fratelli Monchiero

Barolo Nebbiolo 1985

This bottle was the third part of a really fun ensemble of Barolos, generously shared and curated by our friend Tim.

Once again, served blind after a lengthy slow-ox; all the while knowing we were drinking Barolo but that’s it. This bottle had rather obvious signs of age with loads of sediment (though most was decanted off) and a rather pronounced orange rim. On the nose, there was tar for dayzzzz! Secondary characteristics were dominant with dried cherries, balsamico, earth, and truffles. The finish was savory and delicious.

I was sure this was old but I wasn’t sure how old. Revealed as a 1985 Fratelli Monchiero, a producer I was unfamiliar with. Our host mentioned that it came across DOA when the cork was pulled but his experience with old Barolo proved this had a chance to come around; I’m so grateful he showed the patience necessary. A lovely experience.

Gramolere Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.4

From barrel I thought the 2019 Barolo Gramolere was quite elegant, but now it’s anything but. At this stage, it is a searingly tannic and forbidding Barolo, with notes of black cherry, plum, leather, licorice and mocha. The 2019 has shut down massively post-bottling. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Cannubi Barolo Riserva Nebbiolo 2013

Get take out because you’re working retail during the holidays, but do it right with Belotti & Barolo. Fragrant with rose petals, red & black currant, cloves and new leather. Dense with polished tannins that hit every nook & cranny of your mouth. From a producer I don’t know much about. Overall, this was darker Barolo overall than I expected both in terms of fruit profile and color. Is this a Cannubi thing? A barrique thing? — a year ago

Fratelli Revello

Ciabot du Re Barbera d'Alba 2000

Served blind. I never would have guessed!
Amazingly pure bramble black cherry essence - still youthful after 21y, enticing, juicy, with a whiff of wood polish and a pinch of black pepper.
Smooth on the palate, seamless, so juicy. Polished super fine tannins, zippy cherry acidity and a savoury core of black cherry and herbs. Uplifting fresh finish, even if falling a bit short in length.
A delicious wine!

Barolo Nebbiolo 2015

Very nice but for some reason not quite singing at the same level of the last bottle we had of this earlier this year. I do suggest a 2+ hour decant. Lots of cherry and a bit of dark cherry. Quite balanced with great freshness. Long finish. Tannins are a bit chunky at this point, but still a great wine with a fatty steak. — 3 years ago
