Heron Hill

Calluna Vineyards

Estate Chalk Hill Red Blend 2016

Blend of 47% Cab Sauv, 37% Malbec, 9% Petit Verdot & 7% Merlot, deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruits, herb, tobacco and floral notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry and blueberry fruit with licorice, cacao, leather and oak, well balanced. Fine ripe tannins, long finish ending with fruit, oak and spice. A pleasure to drink. Very nice! — 8 days ago

Sing Sweet Things ... Southold Farm & Cellar 2019 Albariño Texas Hill Country
Fruity slightly skunky nose, -- unexpected flinty, salty complex sour taste. Went really well with my mushroom quiche and also with dinner partner's escarole and beans. The acidity really sliced through these savory dishes.

Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

What a pleasant surprise! This 2017 Pinot Noir is terrific. Overarching taste profile is black cherry swathed in nice subtle spices. Finish is lengthy - balanced by fruit and acidity. This is a must buy. — 7 days ago

Home Hill

Kelly's Reserve Tasmania Pinot Noir 2014

Home Hill has become a rising star on the Australian Wine Show scene for the quality of their cool climate Pinot Noir. This wine had aromas of cherry and a little stemmy character. The palate was sweet with plums and black cherry. Very fluid and supple tannins - seamless. Medium weight palate and drinking well now. HH has a drinking window of 2017 to 2029. Cannot see it myself. My remaining 2 bottles will be gone in the next few years - just too delicious. Winner of the 2015 Jimmy Watson Trophy for the Best One Year old Dry Red at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. From the most southerly vineyard in Australia. — a day ago

Hook & Ladder

Estate Bottled Los Amigos Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Full confession. . . I’ve driven by this winery in past trips to Sonoma and failed to enter because of the name. But when I saw this bottle on winespies I decided to try. And. . . I wish I had stopped at the winery in prior visits. This 2015 drinks smoothly with soft, medium tannins. A nose that brings cherries and over ripe strawberries to the front with a small spice hint. Palate has the slight earth/chalk tones along with the fruit. A bottle that pairs well with simple homemade pizza or could go with something more elegant. Glad I have more bottles for the future. — 22 days ago

Grosset

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2004

Very interesting to see this age - upon release this was extremely tight & austere and now it has blossomed into a beautifully expressive aged Riesling w/dark gold color, big whiff of petrol alongside peach & apricot. On the palate it is still razor sharp & angular w/only slightly rounded off edges no doubt due to age & bit of fat it gained. On the finish it is bone dry with clearly defined lemon & lime, mineral-y w/hint of creaminess. — 10 days ago

Great restraint on your part to be drinking this at 17 years - one of Australia’s best.

Bob: did not have access to my cellar for the last 5 years, but I knew these were built for the long run. I love Clare Valley wines (red & white) and I used to sell Grosset... I have more of these & will revisit in a few years

Liquid Farm

White Hill Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 2018

Pop and pour yesterday. Notes from day 2 open. On the nose: soft smoke and chalk, apple, lemon, a hint of reduction...lovely nose. On the palate: chalk, sour apple, lemon, loads of wet stone...fantastic acidity and good density...maybe my favorite incarnation of this wine so far... — a day ago
