Fleur Sauvage (wildflower) White Blend

$25 Becker winery Fredericksburg
Absolute favorite. A wonderfully crafted wine perfect for those summer days spent picnicking in pastures of wildflowers or on the lake, the aromatics of this Fleur Sauvage brings notes of star fruit, orange blossoms, and opens up to a warm note of vanilla bean. Flavors of papaya, apricot, and golden apples are balanced with subtle notes of vanilla custard.

Monthly WTF group recap. Theme this month was “bring something special”. Normally we taste all of the wines blind, but we decided to do a relaxed night with amazing wines at a great restaurant. Spectacular evening!

If you aren’t familiar with this label, it’s a unique concept. The winery is located in Fredericksburg, TX yet the wines are from all over the world (fruit is cold shipped to the winery or made in the country they are sourced from). This is probably best now or over the next few years. It has typical orange blossom and honey notes, with a very creamy mid palate...like an orange creamsicle. Lots of sweetness without much nuttiness.

It was Weston’s hosting today for the Wednesday Wine Committee and probably the most informative lunch to date. Though everything was tasted “blind” as usual, we were all given a list of grapes to choose from for the whites and the reds, since they were all meant to be very similar.

For me, this screamed French NV. Alexander Vineyards is unique in that their tasting room is in Fredericksburg, but all their wines are sourced and made abroad. Lots of green apple. Little yeast or chalk. Bubbles throughout. Sweet up front. I guessed correctly. ✔️

Planned a weekend getaway to the Texas Hill Country for my wife after completing/surviving another year of teaching 5 year olds in kindergarten. Love Fredericksburg and so pleasantly surprised that TX are most definitely increasing in quality. Stunned at some of our finds so far!

Calais winery is owned and run by a Frenchman, who is from the northern part of France near Belgium. Ben definitely uses his heritage in crafting these wines and has made a beautiful marriage with this rosé. TX is churning out a massive amount of quality rosés, and after trying 7 different rosés yesterday, this was the winner. I get grapefruit on the nose and finish, alongside faint hints of kiwi and melon. The body and texture on this are superb! (FYI, he seems to be a wizard at Cab Franc here in TX, where that varietal struggles. Well worth a bottle)

Texas Hill County Riesling 2023

$30 grape creek Fredericksburg
Light- not too sweet. Our charming 2023 Riesling is a brilliant pale straw in hue with a tiny hint of chartreuse. By far our driest Riesling yet with only about 1% residual sugar, the ABV is a late-afternoon friendly 11.4%.

Engaging floral aromas of honeysuckle, white rose petal, gardenia, and citrus blossom are in lovely harmony with nectarine, honey dew melon, and kiwi. The palate is well-balanced, crisp and clean, and finishes with a refreshing, brisk acidity. There is a subtle touch of minerality that should develop nicely with a year or so of bottle age.

Becker Vineyards

Iconoclast Texas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Visiting Fredericksburg TX for a few days. This is TX hill country and has a big winery community. Never tried any TX wines before but found a few surprises here. We tasted at Becker earlier today but not this wine. $30 on the restaurant wine list. Becker wasn’t our favorite stop but it is the only local winery represented on their list. Overall local wines seemed overpriced compared to CA wines. Just realized we had an older vintage (2018) on our last trip from Houston to Anaheim. It’s interesting that most of the grapes used in the local wines come from Lubbock (panhandle) area. Don’t know where these grapes came from, or what varietals are present. — 5 years ago

Ox-Eye Vineyards

Lemberger 2014

This was a unique find when we were traveling to Fredericksburg. It was featured at a different winery, Wilderness Run, which is new with young vines. Lemeberger apparently is a German grape that grows well in Virginia. However it is a young wine and that comes out in the complexity, which was simple and without a longer finish. I'm excited to taste this again in 5, 10, 20 years. — 7 years ago

Great Texas wine... no that’s not a misprint. The vineyards on Hwy 290 near Fredericksburg are the the new “Napa Valley” of Texas. Just stay away from Texas cabs. Not so good. This bottle is a Tempranillo.. much better suited for Texas climate. — 8 years ago

Texas Montepulciano 2018

Had it first at @grapetownvineyard near #fredericksburg and bought the bottle. Had our perfect occasion to open it up and it didn’t disappoint. Medium to full body, not sweet but certainly not on the drier side either—just perfectly balanced with flavor palate of cherry, oak, plum, and blackberry notes. Went well with brick oven pizza after a long day of moving into my honey’s new home. Definitely going to Driftwood, Texas to visit the actual vineyard soon. Great for gifting, special occasions, and romantic evenings. — 2 years ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Wine Club gathering with 1 white and 3 reds, all tasted blind.

This was firing on all cylinders tonight - I couldn’t have asked for a better presentation. Ever since a random guy sitting next to me at the bar at Pax Americana here in Houston shared this with me I’ve searched and searched for it to buy retail; 2-3 years of searching yielded no results. That is until my wife & I took a trip to Fredericksburg (TX) and stumbled upon a stash of it at Vaudeville. I bought 3 bottles and, after learning tonight how the ‘08 is showing, I wish I had bought the entire stash. Mocha, chewed cigar, eucalyptus, and brooding dark berries. This wine has not only aged gracefully but it’s retained its structure remarkably. Drinking at its peak with many more miles to go yet.

@Shay A Agreed. We’ve been many times over the years and always thought the service was wonky but that everything else about it was great. This year we decided to go back to see what’s changed and we had a better overall experience. Their retail wine selection has improved, which is awesome, and I loved the fact that they’re now selling a full lineup of Zaltos upstairs in the home decor shop.
