Cortona, Arezzo

Leuta

Cortona DOC Merlot 2015

This is a very charming smallish winery in Tuscany. Their approach is counterintuitive in that their wine is not necessarily meant to be cellared and the are producing merlot and Sauvignon blanc in a place where you don’t normally see it. The merlot is excellent and has characteristics of a Sangiovese with refined tannins. This is different in a very good way. Cheers Denis and Jennifer — a month ago

La Braccesca (Antinori)

Bramasole Cortona Syrah 2009

Beautiful dark purple, raisins, dried cherries, basil, clove, fig, mellowed tannins. This region needs to make more Syrah! — 6 months ago

Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro (Manzano)

Il Bosco Cortona Syrah 2013

Really smooth and silky Syrah from Tuscany, which represents the grape variety really well. There are some clove plum black fruit pepper cinnamon. It's quite obvious that this wine has some aging potential.

Podere Brizio

Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Bought in Cortona in 2011. Shelving one and drank the other. Absolute perfection. Perfect with red meat, super deep and tannic for the heavier Sangiovese fan. Can’t go wrong!

Champagne is for celebrating! Today, 12 years ago, I married my love & best friend in Cortona, Italy...in the heart of Tuscany. The day still lingers like it was yesterday. It was a spectacular day that I will never forget. Such memories!!!

So, to my wife Sofia, cheers!🍾🥂. I love you today more than ever.

All my previous notes apply. 9.4 on the Champange, a 10 on my partner choice and our day twelve years ago.

Tenuta Sette Ponti

Crognolo Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2012

Last ‘12 in my cellar, aged very well. The estate of Sette Ponti lies in the heart of the Chianti zone, 15 miles northwest of the city of Arezzo, past the village of San Giustino Valdarno. Sangiovese/Merlot blend, aged in French Allier barriques, deep red with red fruit aromas and sweet spice. On the palate raspberry and sweet cherry flavors, tobacco, spice and soft tannins. Good balance, long finish ending with some earthy oak and mineral tones. Drink now. — 22 days ago

Fontarca Viognier 2017

A light and supple Viognier that is delightfully food friendly. Nectarine, quince and a refreshing salinity combine deliciously.

A glass of this went into a sauce and the whole thing worked very nicely together. Unfortunately my wife and I ended up eating separately because the baby was freaking out in the midst of the much documented eight month sleep regression...

Château Haut-Bages Libéral

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

David T
9.2

For our wedding reception in Cortona, I packed a magnum of 1986 Haut-Bages Liberal. Since then, we have bought it in all good Bordeaux years and have one on our anniversary. Sadly, I have an 86 somewhere in my EuroCave cabinets. I just couldn’t find it. It has been a challenging afternoon. Next year! A excellent vintage of Haut-Bages Liberal will just have to fill in.

The nose reveals; dark currants, heavily extracted blackberries, creamy black raspberries, black plum with skin, dark cherries, mix of purple fruits, sweet tarriness, dark chocolate, caramel, mocha, cinnamon, vanilla, light clove, some dark spices, lots of steeped, dark fruit tea, fresh Provenance herbs, anise, limestone minerals, dry clay, dry top soil, dry stones, a fair amount of graphite, fresh tobacco leaf, saddle-wood to cedar, leathery notes, dry underbrush, bright; dark, red, blue and violet florals.

Most of the 2000 Left Bank wines typically remain tight as a drum. This is just starting to open up and ascend.

The body is full, ripe, rich, lush and showing the beauty of the vintage. The tannins are rounded but, still show plenty of teeth and meaty, sticky, tarriness. The structure & tension are just starting to relax. The length and balance are really nice and will continue to better with many years in bottle. It’s still a hold for 7–10 years for its full beauty. Dark currants, heavily extracted blackberries, creamy black raspberries, black plum with skin, dark cherries, mix of purple fruits, strawberries, sweet tarriness, dark chocolate, caramel, mocha, cinnamon, vanilla, light clove, dark spices with palate heat, lots of steeped, dark fruit tea, fresh Provenance herbs, anise, expresso roast, limestone minerals, dry clay, dry, crushed rocks, dry top soil, dry stones, a fair amount of graphite, hints of black pepper, old & fresh tobacco leaf, saddle-wood to cedar, leathery notes, dry underbrush, bright; dark, red, blue and violet florals. The acidity is round and near perfect. The long finish is; ripe, well balanced with fruit and earth with penetrating earth/minerals and persists several minutes.

Happy Anniversary Sofia...would love to do it all over again as we did in 2012.
