Mt. Brave is a relative newcomer to the Jackson Family portfolio however, to my palate, it’s one of the more interesting. Like many of the more remarkable wines, it’s the land that makes Mt. Brave special. The vineyard way up on Mt. Veeder was formerly the source of fruit for the OG Chateau Potelle, which sold to Jess Jackson back in 2007.

Popped and poured; consumed over three days. Fairly consistent throughout but it might have been my favorite on Day 2. The 2012 pours a deep ruby, bordering purple with an opaque core. Medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears; definitely some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of blackberries, cassis, black plums, tobacco, new leather, some light pyrazines, rocky earth, and beautiful baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and the dark fruit is so dense! Drinks well now but could easily bring delight through 2035.

We’re snowed ❄️ in on a Friday night and decided to imbibe this generously gifted Chateau Potelle, VGS Vintage 2010, ABV 14.5%. It’s predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, from Mount Veeder in Napa Valley, California. 🍷 🇺🇸

Wow, aromas and flavors are exuberant, concentrated, rich, and span a spectrum of characteristics from candied plum, ripe black cherry, and crème de cassis to black olive and crushed violet, to nutmeg, cardamom, and clove, to leather, tobacco, smoke, meat, and earth.

Tannins and mouthfeel are supple and smooth. Acidity is present, lending balance.

This wine is bold and is drinking beautifully now, though it has potential for further aging.

Dark, impenetrable black, explosive dark berry, juicy midnight cherry aromas boiling out of the glass. This is OG, throwback Cali zin conjured by a master. Actually more approachable than I anticipated, smooth silky sexy grape-ness. Balance is impressive, tannins come through in the finish… but round, not green or bitter. I remember falling in love with Joel Peterson’s masterful creations 30 years ago. Sometimes you can go home again. Well done Joel— I salute your life and work by raising a glass in your honor.
