Château La Clare

Wendouree

Shiraz 1999

Ruby/crimson in colour - a tawny rim developing. A little porty to begin with - the trademark Wendouree/Clare Valley menthol/eucalyptus. A note of Iodine. Very earthy on the palate. This wine speaks of the ancient terroir where vines have been planted since the 1880’s. Full bodied, intense and powerful even at 25 years of age. A true icon of Australian wine but even Wendouree Shiraz does have an end point and I think this 1999 has reached its peak. — a month ago

Another beauty, @Bob McDonald. Not available in the U.S. If I were back in the UK, I’m sure I could get my paws on some!

@Ron R Ron I think fellow Delectable poster Severn Goodwin got his hands on some Wendouree over there but it was expensive.

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2013

Mid yellow in colour. Musky notes with a little talc - white and yellow flowers. On the palate lovely ripe peach flavours. Incredible flavour intensity. Irresistible. Low acid. Definitely one of Australia’s best dry Rieslings. No notes of TDN. Have the last one in a year or two. See previous Delectable note 6 years ago in June 2018 when it was carrying more citric acid. — 2 months ago

@Bob McDonald, yes it is. Gaia isn’t tho. It’s a real shame because there’s been a pull-back on Aussie wines in the U.S. Over 20 years ago, the market was flooded with Aussie wines, many sub par. Now Aussie wines occupy a small space on the shelves over here.

Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

A well aged Cabernet Sauvignon is superb .. and this was a perfect example. Dusky, almost smoky and silky smooth. The tannins so well rounded it seems to form a ball of liquid gold across the palate. Simply bloody awesome!! — 4 months ago

Hills & Valleys Clare Valley Riesling 2015

There’s no reason for this 2015 bargain bin wine to be as sublime as it is right now in 2024. Classic petrol with candied tangerine, grapefruit and ginger aromatics mid palate is lively again with candied citrus. A little lightweight at the finish but an unexpected pleasure — 2 months ago

A very strong Shiraz. Likely needs another five years of aging. Good but overpowering. — 5 months ago
