Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2022

2022 vintage. A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. This biodynamic estate goes from strength to strength in the capable hands of Caroline Frey. In this exceptional vintage La Lagune honours its reputation as the finest wine in the Haut-Médoc appellation. Black fruit, flowers, cedar and subtle spices. A thick mouth feel, with layers of succulent fruit, spices, and a powerful structure of what might be the most velvety tannins ever for this estate. As usual it displays that unique aromatic and elegant character that I describe as somewhere between Margaux and Pessac-Léognan. Impressive depth and length. A strong contender for the title of best La Lagune ever. — 20 days ago

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah

2006 vintage. The first vintage for Caroline Frey to be in charge. This shows beautifully now for a wine that was totally underrated by Robert Parker on release. While it may not have the depth and power of the greatest vintages of this iconic wine, this 2006 is a terrific wine in it's own right. Complex nose with spices, black fruit, tobacco and cedar. In the mouth it is beautifully balanced with bright acidity embracing layers of black fruit and spices and velvety tannin. Impressive length too. Abv. 14%. — 2 years ago

Oude Geuze

Bottled 28 March 2018. Blend no. 42. Season 17/18. Shared by @Bryan Frey for a delicious nightcap and to honor Armand’s passing on 6 March. Just a perfectly balanced, funky, citrusy, earthy lambic. Best before 2038, but there is no way I could get my hands on enough to test that date as they would disappear well before then. — 3 years ago

Loads of minerals on the nose, some deep apple fruit underneath. Full and dry on the palate. A powerful Riesling. — 5 months ago

Grand Cru Frankstein Alsace Gewürztraminer 2017

This Gewurz has a really nice purity and freshness, likely in part due to the fact it was grown biodynamically. Nose has musky lychee, along with a bright stony minerality that manages to push through the deep Gewurz perfume. Fairly sweet in the mouth, but with enough energy to carry it. Finish is actually kind of delicate. Superb. (Ed.: I actually would prefer it if growers in Alsace moved the needle on Gewurz a bit more to the dry side, but I love the good ones any way I can get them.) — 2 years ago
