Grand Cru Frankstein Alsace Gewürztraminer 2017

This Gewurz has a really nice purity and freshness, likely in part due to the fact it was grown biodynamically. Nose has musky lychee, along with a bright stony minerality that manages to push through the deep Gewurz perfume. Fairly sweet in the mouth, but with enough energy to carry it. Finish is actually kind of delicate. Superb. (Ed.: I actually would prefer it if growers in Alsace moved the needle on Gewurz a bit more to the dry side, but I love the good ones any way I can get them.) — 2 years ago

Oude Geuze

Bottled 28 March 2018. Blend no. 42. Season 17/18. Shared by @Bryan Frey for a delicious nightcap and to honor Armand’s passing on 6 March. Just a perfectly balanced, funky, citrusy, earthy lambic. Best before 2038, but there is no way I could get my hands on enough to test that date as they would disappear well before then. — 2 years ago

Have no idea where I got this but was pleasantly surprised. Very earthy with minerality and tobacco. Never been a a German red fan but this is worthy🍷 — 2 years ago

Paul Jaboulet Aîné

La Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 1998

Until Caroline Frey took over wine making responsibilities, “La Chapelle” was sort of known to me as a perennial underachiever with very few vintages in the last 40 years really meeting their potential. The late 90’s was perhaps the deepest point of the malaise. That being said, this bottle proves that the underpinnings were always there and I found it to be very enjoyable, if not quite on the level of the other examples of late-90’s Hermitage we enjoyed on the night. There is still quite a bit of life left. — 2 years ago

The 1991 an outlier? Only compared to what came after. Before it was fabulous ( with 1990, 1978 and 1964 some of the best wines I have ever tasted).

@Stefan Dolhain The last 40 years, which only covers back through the early 1980’s, Jaboulet has underachieved. That was my statement; context. And actually, I really meant that 1990 was the outlier. Can’t speak to the 1991. Regardless, no sense in you and I fussing about it since it’s my opinion anyway and who cares what I think in the grand scheme of things 😅

It all depends on what you have tasted Jay. La Chapelle 1964 - 1991 was definitely one of the best verticals in my wine career. But in the end it all comes down to personal taste anyway.

Chardonnay 2019

No sulfur and pristine as can be! It has a certain texture to it that made me think of breathing the Mendocino air—like all these things are growing and yes, wine is a living thing! Depth. And red apples and cantaloupe. — 3 years ago
