I love that wine is a universal form of expression, capable of crossing oceans and connecting us to a different time. I love how wine is a confluence of art and science that can add a magical dimension to just about every experience.

This past summer, my husband and I, along with our friend Winston, registered for a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines class and exam. We proceeded to devote countless hours to learning about different viticultural and vinification processes and their impact on the resulting style and quality of wine; learning about old and new world regions and subregions, their histories, geographies, topographies, soil, latitudinal positioning, wine laws, terroir, noteworthy winemaking techniques and innovations, legendary winemakers and merchants, and varietals. We tasted wine after wine, learned and practiced the Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT), and explored regional varietals we’d never heard of previously.

We were welcomed into communities, groups, and gatherings, where we were mentored and supported by true and inspiring wine experts.

And, with gratitude, I’m thrilled to report we (all three of us) passed the WSET Level 3 exam with honors; I passed it with distinction.

Cheers to the amazing world of wine!! The more I learn about you, the more I love you and realize I still barely know you. I’ve just scratched the surface of your depths.

This is a superb NV Champagne, really quite dry, with flavours of butterscotch, shortbread, lemon pith, white grapefruit, all cut along a savoury and chalky profile with firm acidity, great texture and satisfying length. For a house wine, this is a real success. — 12 days ago

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes Ambonnay Brut Blanc De Noirs Champagne

Pretty dark gold in the glass... July 2015 Disgorgement. Round and ripe on the attack...light but persistent bubbles. Ripe apple, buttered brioche, sweet lemon pithe. Elegant, powerful, still displaying some structure. But... as it warms, it blooms and blossoms in the glass. Delightful and long on the finish. These guys get often overlooked on behalf of this or that hip new grower... but the skill and quality of fruit are first-rate. Perhaps a hint of oxidation, but leaves me in a very good place wanting more. — 12 days ago

Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2008

Light straw color, lots of bubbles and nice energy in the glass. Has an exciting nose that expresses Blanc de Blanc attributes and the potential of a great young champagne. Opened for 30 min before trying it, I think it came out of the blocks as closed and not showing much. With air it opens up somewhat – but this definitely needs years more lying on its side to gain some age and complexity. Notes of citrus and some toast, some creamy floral notes, some river stone and some fresh cut apples. Wanted to try this out, and will wait for another 5 years before touching the next one. Reminded me of the 2002 when I first tried it. Will be great, and patience is needed to watch it develop and grow up. — 11 days ago

Cuvée Rubis 1er Cru Brut Champagne

Perfect for Valentine’s Day. First things first, this is a stunning salmon rose color in the glass. Persistent perlage with a creamy mousse. Tiny little bubbles. A terrific red fruit bouquet showcasing wild strawberry, orange peels, and red cherries. Purple flowers and dried herbs compliment. But I just cannot get over this striking color.

Pure sex in a bottle. Not dainty or waifish at all, there’s some serious muscle here to go along with the innate finesse. Disgorged 10/19 with a 9 g/l dosage, the striking acidity takes care of that and provides a smooth experience on the tongue. 90/10 PN/CH this is one of the standout Rosé champagnes around. Never cloying despite the dosage, everything here is perfectly balanced and structured. Just splendid really.

Sensual in the mouth, you get a full blast of red fruit on the palate. That 15% of still red wine really shows here. Grapefruit and dried cherries are dominant with a little strawberry joining in. Peaches and cream with herbs. Medium long finish. An outstanding grower that really is a cut above the rest.

Millésime Vieilles Vignes Ambonnay Brut Champagne 2005

8 years on lees. Disgorged in July 2014. Golden in color. Toasted brioche, a bit of a nutty finish. Crisp. These should be consumed in the next couple of years, at least for my palate. Enjoyed with lobster risotto. — 11 days ago

Grande Cuvée Brut Reims Champagne Blend

Looks to be a bottle from the 80s mature rich and complex . Toffee , brioche, mushrooms kept in check by golden delicious apple fruit . This is a winner and it’s nice to have a grand cuvée with age since most of these get drunk way to young ! — 6 days ago
