The only German Syrah I've ever tried is one I won't forget. So unnaproachable at first, a stone cold snub, dark like motor oil.
Meaty blood soaked liver, mint snuff, graphite, pencil shavings. Huge tannins to break down.
But find those little Syrah nuggets - metallic minerals and the tiniest bit of violet, and you realize there's something special here. It just takes a second to understand.

Brilliant vintage for this wine. Nose is green apple and a hint of butter. Very wet earth and mineral. Reeks of limestone and terroir. Textured, rich and concentrated but also nimble and pure. Really focused like a laser. Juicy and lean. Very angled wine. Needs to open. But a stunner. Nose becomes confectionary with air. Palate gets a little plump but still linear and fresh. — a month ago
Love this wine. Exuberant nose of mineral and a bowl of only the best late season darker cherries. Some earth and spice but this needs air to get to the level. Palate is so juicy and clean with top flight finesse and wonderfully silky and delicate tannins. So pure and sappy. Floats on the palate and has all the finesse. Superb concentration and tiny berry fruit explosiveness but just dripping with limestone minerality. Gorgeous wine but let’s see where air takes it. With air this has gotten tangy and super complex. Amazing lightness of touch and freshness. Now a 9.6. — 2 months ago
Good Pinot Noir although at the end of its life. A little sour in the finish but elegant in the attack like a masculine Burgundy. — 3 months ago
Great nose. Smokey, stone fruits, red apple, super vivid, what stunning minerality. Great nose, staring to get secondary. Wood shavings. Palate is rich and opulent yet tense and invigorating. Great tensile finish. So long. Precise and linear. The Z man can do it elite at all price points. This is crazy good and age only adds. As this airs it fills out and gets chewy and concentrated and retains its elite freshness and length. Almost a 9.4. — 2 months ago
Tight, uncoiling only with a day of slow ox in bottle. But then this is delicious. Fantastic upper register floral nose, red plum and cherry and a fresh pastry dough on the palate. A bit austere now — all the fruit dries out a bit on the finish. But with the right food it hits the spot. — 3 months ago
