Citra Extra Extra Juicy Bits

Ron R
9.4

Just a really good IPA. It checks in at 8.6 % abv, so buckle up. Very hazy in the glass. I assume this is unfiltered. Lots of citrus fruits are moderated by the tart hoppy notes. Finishes with caramel and bright acidity. If you can locate this, fill yer boots! — a day ago

On the White Keys Artists' Reserve California Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc 2016

Shay A
9.3

Made in a bordeaux Blanc style with the use of oak. Very creamy and soft with a rich kiwi, grapefruit and powdered lemon bar aromatics. Soft at first but a surprising amount of acidity at the finish. Lingering notes of stone and tropical fruits. This 2016 has a bit more limestone and savory sea salt notes than I found the 2017 did, though I still agree with my assessment that it has a profile of a combo of Spottswoode’s SB and Aesthete’s SB. No rush here. — 5 days ago

Borreo Single Vineyard Sangiovese 2018

Silverado Vineyards Borreo Ranch Vineyard Borreo Sangiovese 2018, Napa Valley, California

Pretty ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Fruity nose with blueberries, sweet cherries, strawberries, light oak, vegetables, spices, peppercorn, chocolates and light herbs.

Medium in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with cherries, raspberries, spices, herbs, light earth, vegetables, dark coffee and peppercorn.

Spicy finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is an interesting red wine from Napa Valley. This Single Vineyard is showing mild complexity with a soft mouthfeel. Spicy and tangy.

Drinks like a Pinot Noir, but spicy with a Zinfandel flavor profile. Interesting stuff. A great wine for a blind tasting.

I gave it an hour to open up. Gets earthier after 2 hours of airtime.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with cheeses and crackers.

100% Sangiovese grapes were aged in French oak barrels (16% new).

14.2% alcohol by volume.

Subduction McCabe’s Brook Marquette 2015

A night if firsts for me: first Marquette and first Vermont wine!
Love the vibrant acidity. Nose leads me down the lovechild path of Beaujolais romancing Bonarda. Heavily cranberried sauciness with herbal influences. I would like to chill this few degrees and revisit with a thanksgiving menu in the fall. Likey!

Love Rosé North Coast Valdiguié Blend 2020

A beautiful rogue and blush hue in the glass. Pink, but not. More amber, more salmon. Lovely flourish of color.

The bouquet is a booze soaked watermelon. 🍉

A picnic 🧺 A river current 🌊

I’m tasked with writing my third installment of my column “Liquid Carriage,” where and how drinks transport us for an online magazine out of Columbia University MFA grads, No Contact.

With the turn in weather, I debated what I should write about. Riesling? Aperol Spritz? Vermouth and soda? Orange wine? But how about pink? How about Rosé?

This one surely would support my angle of debunking the association of Rosé with the label “basic.”

Maybe at some point, the Rosé Americans were accustomed to drinking were majorly lacking in complexity or nuance. But not anymore.

Dry and mineral notes blend nicely with the watermelon pucker medium acidity. Not too overpowering, this hits multiple savory notes. I especially like it’s echo of of freshly plucked dark cherries 🍒 right towards the end note.

Perfect post run thirst quencher in this heat.

Bellingar Estates South Pass Syrah 2018, Oregon

Deep purple in color with a purplish rim.

Fruity nose of black plums, wild flowers, cooked blueberries, light wood, earth, tobacco, chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, violets and herbs.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, light oak, licorice, spices, coffee, chocolates and peppercorn.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This Syrah from Oregon is drinking very nicely now. rich and fruit forward.

Nicely balanced and elegant. Showing nice complexity with a nice, soft mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle, and better as it opens up. I gave it two hours in a decanter.

This Single Vineyard is interesting and easy drinking. Fragrant and aromatic with a teeth staining color. Feels very much like a good quality California Syrah.

Aged in French oak barrels (10% new) for 24 months. A very small production of only 100 cases.

Ridge Vineyards

Monte Bello Ridge California Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

From a mini vertical of Monte Bello at a friend’s house. This 08 is easily the most concentrated of the 06, 07, 08. A bit of lemony oak is still yet to integrate on the nose, but all the components are there. Best concentration of the bunch. The fruit is rich and pure and the tannins and acids are really in nice balance. Give this 5 more years. — 12 days ago

Napa Valley Merlot 2018

It's time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.

Deep purple in color with a short purple rim.

Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black plums, cooked cherries, oak, spices, vanilla, licorice tobacco, chocolates, dark coffee, graphite and peppercorn.

Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a very nice Merlot from Napa Valley. Still young, but already easy drinking. Tangy and spicy, and good by itself or with food. Soft and elegant.

Good right out of the bottle and better with some air time (60 minutes). Would age nicely in the next 5 years.
