The Hidden Northridge Vineyard Syrah 2010

Shay A

This was a head scratcher. My plan on opening this was due to a craving for some savory/funky Syrah, but what I got was a nice aged Syrah minus any sort of herbal/savory/meat type characteristics. I’m not really sure why? No technical flaw to the wine, but my experience seems to be an outlier...

I followed this over two days and it stayed mostly the same the entire time. Perfumed aromatics of potpourri, high percentage cherry infused dark chocolate, and grilled, underripe black cherries. It is nicely balanced at this point in its evolution, showing power without much weight. Red currant, tangy grilled rhubarb, plum, cocoa dusted dates, and mocha show up on the palate.

For the glass nerds out there (of which I am one of), I tried this out of the Zalto Universal and the Glasvin Universal (pictured). I found the Zalto to have slightly better aromatics as it showed more complexity, but the balance and bowl of the Glasvin were preferred. Similar drinking experience from both.

Haven’t had enough Syrah from Wahluke Slope to determine whether they tend to be as funkalicious as those from The Rocks.

Hidden Horse No. 17 Red Blend

Blown away by how great this blend was! Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon w/ Merlot + Cabernet Franc & Malbec. Beautiful dark color, complex fruit flavor; black raspberry/cherry with nice acidity. 🎇🎇🎇 — 3 days ago

More tart cherry flavors and savory herbal aromas. Delicious and less big fruit than many other vintages of Southing. — 17 days ago

Scar of the Sea

Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2018

A bright cherry red color with thin edges. A ridiculous nose consisting of dry earth, red fruits, baking spices, and rose petal. The light funk is subtle enough to not offend those who could be but prevalent enough for the rest of us. I could smell this thing for hours. It’s perfect.

Easily one of the best producers of Pinot Noir in California, don’t go in expecting the usual supermarket fare. It is not a high octane full throttle wine. It’s not a Pinot that could double as a Syrah. Amazingly light, this could use a light chill. Mild tannins and silky on the tongue.

Prominent strawberry and cherry on the palate initially. There is a vegetal tinge here but it’s not too pronounced. A little pepper, a little smoke. Some wonderful minerality here too. This is a great Pinot and I believe it’s their entry offering. Get some while you can.
