Shafer 1.5

Shafer Vineyards

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Hillside Select is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 32 months in 100% new 60-gallon French oak barrels. Deep Ruby with pronounced aromas of red/black fruits, with hints of cedar, floral, oak, herbs & spice. On the palate flavors of concentrated ripe blackberry, cherry and raspberry preserves, pepper spice, leather and earthy cacao. Fine soft savory tannins, well balanced, long finish, great structure ending with fruit, spice, oak and earthy mineral character. Outstanding! — 4 days ago

IX Estate Napa Valley Red Blend 2014

1.5 hour decant (decent fine/cloudy sediment). A fabulous deep ruby red color. On the nose: dark red fruit, leather, sandalwood, floral, and nutmeg. Taste: power and depth with dark cherry, dark chocolate, spice, leather, and an earthy espresso long finish. YUM! — 2 months ago

Long decant and this is big. Tight. Great with steak but just needs years. — a month ago

Rocco’s takeout and a nice bottle. Not a bad Saturday night. Bonus that the wife is letting me call the ball after dinner. — 3 months ago

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. Excellent cork and fill. Decanted with minimal sed and tasted after 1.5 hours. One of the few outlier exceptions (Haut-Bages-Libéral, Pichon-Lalande, et al) that proves the general, big and bold, Pauillac rule. Delicate impressions from start to finish with impeccable balance. Medium body. Plenty of flavors and sensations without big, overt commitments to any of them. Playing the field and we are all the better for it. Drinking beautifully now without any perceived or obvious Scylla/Charybdis pitfalls in the next decade. 01.16.26. — 13 days ago

Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2002

Absolutely lovely classic left bank. 2002 was a less heralded year, but this has stood up extremely well. Just getting to secondary now, still a ton of fruit and earth and leather on the nose and palate. Excellent acid and a very long finish. 13% which is appreciated and the seamlessness comes through. Really delicious and a perfect Thanksgiving meal pairing. Opened 5 hours before dinner and decanted for 1.5 hours. Perfect spot. — 2 months ago
