Domaine Grosbot-Barbara

S.A.S Prince Charles-Henri de Lobkowicz St. Pourçain Chardonnay Blend 2016

Lyle Fass
9.5

The inimitable Grosbot-Barbara Chardonnay Tressallier St. Pourcain blend. A favorite of mine. Nothing like it. Nose is really terrific. Like elite 1er Cru st. Aubin. Airy, mineral and so aromatically refined. Classy minerals. Really classy. This is such an elite wine. Subtle spice. Hint of framing oak. So good. Balanced and super pure. Juicy, structured, clean and electric. Rich and energetic with a knockout finish. Amazingly precise and deep. Such a brilliant wine. It’s like white burgundy crossed with Anjou Blanc. So good — a day ago

En Combe Saint-Véran Chardonnay 2017

Wow this wine is singing and it’s just a baby!! This is probably the most exciting Wine I’ve had in a while, meaning that it jumped out of the glass and kind of cast a spell on us. Classic white burgundy profile: apples, pears, rocks and some chamomile tea but also with this touch of lightning that makes it magic! perfect with homemade chicken Pho but wd be perfect with many things 🌟❤️ — 7 days ago

Château Fombrauge

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

2018 vintage. With 58,6 hectares under vine this is the largest Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion. It was bought in 1999 by Bernard Magrez, leading to a major improvement of the wines. Lately they seem to have toned down the oak handling a bit and this 2018 is the best Fombrauge I have ever tasted. Beautiful nose with red and black fruit, subtle spices with the oak providing a classy cedary touch. Full-bodied and layered, but with more finesse than ever, perfectly integrated oak and a long finish, this is terrific value at less than 25 euros. — 3 days ago

Domaine Julien Cécillon

Babylone Saint-Joseph Syrah 2016

Very dark in color, so surprising when the palate shows more red fruit than anything else. This has some savory character and some acidic structure, but tannins are a bit soft. The nose is cracked pepper and some darker fruit. This is a nice wine, but I’d say it drinks more like a balanced new world offering than a St Joseph. — 4 days ago

This is having a great moment. Smoke, olives, dark berry fruit, blueberry. Huge granite and deep mineral tones. Juicy, so fresh, deep and concentrated with outrageous purity and a long finish. Loads of medium to dark berry fruit and really really long finish and also serious structure. What a showing. This has got 15+ years ahead of it but is fun today. These wines will last a long time. — 14 days ago

Pierre Gonon

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2016

Love every vintage of Gonon- the best St. Joseph IMO. So expressive and giving seemingly at any age, as it was here with 2016. My second 2016 in the last few months. Signature inky purple. Deep and intense with great texture showing black fruits, liquid minerals, newly bloomed violets, black olive and hints of cacao. Wonderful concentration, energy and finesse. Stains the palate with a long and assertive finish. Excellent. — 17 days ago

For a 30$ wine at the time this was great but what remains should be consumed fast — 5 days ago

Château Gruaud Larose

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Scarlet tawny and opaque. Great, complex nose offering notes of black cherries, herbal tobacco leaf and freshly cut Cuban cigar, cedar wood and a hint of menthol. Nicely balanced in the mouth. Gave it 5 hours of air in a decanter and patience was rewarded with a great aged Bordeaux experience. Great stuff. Paired with a 92 Dominus it was interesting to find how much these wines resemble each other. — 3 days ago

Cavanos Saint Joseph Syrah 2016

Consumed directly after the 2015 Cornas “Le Village”. This was just a notch below that wine in my opinion. Right now, the structure is taking center stage and not allowing the fruit to deliver in the same way its cousin is giving. I also think the Cornas showed more complexity. Not that this isn’t endowed with fruit or complexity. A very lovely wine though. — 9 days ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Allen Brothers Ribcap wine.

2004 not the best Bordeaux vintage but, certainly not bad. What was disappointing was how not ready this was to drink. Normally, a lesser than grand vintage 14 years in bottle Cos would have blossomed better. Good but, not what I was hoping for with my Ribcap. Still showing a fair amount of primary characteristics & a touch astringent.

It will be 5-8 years before I open another.

Truly one of the more grand Chateaus in Bordeaux.
