Saint Émilion

Château Pavie Macquin

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Decanted for a couple hours. High expectations.

NOSE: branches and brambly fruit … raspberry … a little leather and shoe polish … cassis … blueberry … old book (but not must, mid-century) … minerals and earth … something very fresh … leaves …

TASTE: elegant and subtle. Smooth. Dark fruits and leaves and smooth tannins. Black raspberry. Distinct minerals - clay, stones. Something very fresh, like fresh cut herbs or spices - but not green ones. Turkish coffee? There’s some very complex range of spices I can’t quite get to … cardamom is in there. Burnt orange. A dash of rose petal. A real treat. Started subtle, then once I had a bit to eat, began to explode. 95

EDIT: I believe this is the highest rating I have handed out for a red wine. It’s good.

What are your thoughts on 2003s, specifically left bank? I know it was a warm vintage, but I just picked up some Pichon Baron and Pontet Canet yet haven’t tasted many ‘03s the last few years.

Hey Shay, both wines handled the heat well in 03. I have had more than a case of the PB & several cases of the PC & never had an issue. Enjoy!

Château Lafon-Rochet

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

The deep ruby colored Château Lafon-Rochet 2017 reveals aromas of blackcurrant, black cherries, red and black plum, cedar wood, mint and wet leafes. The palate is medium to full bodied, balanced by good acidity, decent fruit concentration and grippy tannins. Well made but fails to deliver a lasting impression. Drink from 2024 until 2037. — 8 days ago

Château Fleur Cardinale

Saint-Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Paired with Lamb cavatelli 👌 2018 vintage on 10/'22. Decanted 1.5 hours.

Nose: spearmint, leather, oak, earthy with subtle vanilla notes.
Palate: medium plus acidity, likely from the Merlot. Medium tannins, nicely integrated. Black currants, tobacco, cacao, dried fig, bell pepper with a nice Long finish.

Château Angélus

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Delectable Wine

The 2012 Angélus has a fragrant bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit, truffle, crushed stone and light wilted flower scents. Very pretty. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and good acidity, quite sappy with modest depth. Fairly structured with a dash of white pepper and peppermint on the finish. This Angélus has tons of personality and is drinking well now. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Château Ausone

Saint Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

2017 and 2004 vintages sampled
3/6.5/9 out of 100 = 95 for 2017
3/6.5/9.5 out of 100 = 95 for 2004
Greater approachability on palate with age but plenty of strong tannins still present.
Very enjoyable

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 1982

Delectable Wine

The 1982 Cheval Blanc is a vintage that I have not drunk for a number of years, so this was a pertinent reminder of its pulchritude. It has a flat-out gorgeous bouquet with ebullient red fruit, warm bricks (terracotta), hints of liquorice and strawberry jam. It's the kind of bouquet that you could bathe in. The palate has a ripe entry, voluptuous yet exquisitely balanced, the Cabernet components of this Cheval Blanc quite expressed and more pronounced than I recall. Yet it's toying with you as it segues into a more Burgundy-like final third. Mercurial, sensual and riveting. Tasted at the 1982 Dinner at Hatched. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2022)

Château Talbot

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2000

Nose has blackberry/blueberry jam, fresh roses, burnt leather, cigar humidor, dried mud and spring violets.

Palate has rain soaked blackberries, ripe plum, dried orange zest, cedar, dried blueberries with mild tannins. Lovely wine.

Purchased in February 2005; $34. Fantastic price for this great Fourth Growth producer, I wish we'd bought a lot more on this vintage.

Decanted 5H at the time of notes, more time appreciated. A beautiful wine, drink 2025-2030. Paired with Allen Bros. rib caps tonight, delectable. 😉
