Aromatic and expressive right out of the gate. Smoky, sanguine nose with elegance and soft velvety texture. Drinking really well now. — a month ago

Domaine Colbois

Bourgogne Chitry Chardonnay 2017

Wow. This is really good right out of the gate. Reminiscent of a 1er Cru Chablis. Nose is intensely earthy/mineral, with straw-inflected appley fruit underneath. A little of that Chablis brothiness I associate with Kimmeridgien (sp.?) terroir. Intensely flavored in the mouth, with the acids and the minerality combining for some serious pucker. Crisp, bone dry, and refreshing. Would be amazing with grilled shrimp or prawns. — a month ago

Schulen Spätburgunder 2014

Nose is lovely gunsmoke. Chocolate. Cherry coffee.

Palate is so ripping clean, mineral and juicy. Early season cherries. So good.

A 9.2 Out of the gate. What a great wine with food.

Freshness on this is insane. Tastes like a 2020.

The Bourgogne rouge they serve in heaven. All I need is pate, cornichons, cigarette smoke and some rude French waiters.

Contacto Monção & Melgaço Alvarinho 2019

There’s a ripe stone fruit or possibly a papaya note right out of the gate as well as some fresh floral notes. It eludes to an air of springtime. On the palate it’s lush, savory, and briny. Overall it has bright Meyer lemon acidity and a beautiful balance of fruit and salt.
It would have paired perfectly with the oysters I tried to pick up on the way here…
Salmon is an adequate substitute!

Had this Sunday evening. Surprisingly approachable for such a young wine from Justin Smith at Saxum, the wine is fantastic right out of the gate and just blossoms from there. Fantastic. — 7 days ago

Azienda Agricola COS

Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Frappato Nero d'Avola 2017

I love these wines that are most definitely not playing to the masses. Medium garnet with a wide brim. The nose is highly attractive fresh out of the gate. A ridiculous amount of fruit here with blackberries, black cherries, and strawberries. Eucalyptus and smoke. Herbs and spice. Beautiful earth and foresty goodness with the suggestion of funk. Terrific aromas.

COS uses clay amphorae for storage and biodynamic viticulture to produce wines as naturally as possible. 60% Nero d’Avola, 40% Frappato di Vittoria. This is all about the terroir, it’s a glorious wine that truly speaks of a place and is driven by that. The acid is nice and vibrant and the tannins round. Plenty more fruit to be found on the palate with red and black fruits. More dusty earth, leather, and stones. A long finish that leaves you wanting more. And my friends, you do want more.

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

You have to be patient. Out of the gate everyone loved the Maybach which is just so delicious right out of the chute. Give it an hour (probably more) and this really starts to shine. Two hours into dinner this was amazing and just outshined the Maybach. To be clear I love both. Start with Maybach finish with this and just be incredibly happy. Happy anniversary. — a month ago
