Absolutlely transporting nose of soft bacon fat, charcoal, herbs, black raspberry, soft florals....just textbook Cote-Rotie, but some stylish vanilla and spice thrown in for good measure. Deep, powerful and intense with exceptional detail and layered complexity. Rich dark fruit, campfire smoke, black olive and violets come at you in waves. There is incredible depth and purity of fruit on the palate that’s backed by lively energy and lift. It’s still quite primary in its evolution with some powdery tannins and oak presenting themselves but it’s such a joy to drink and it’s so giving at this stage. Brought from my cellar to a special edition of Tasting Group in celebration of one of the member’s turning 40. On this night, the theme was sparkling wines, served blind. Poured a deep, golden color; bubbles still going strong. On the nose, oxidative notes of almonds accompanied by bruised apple and a touch of Greek yogurt. On the palate, this is rich and opulent, again with the apples with lemon. Crazy acidity with a finish lasting for well over a minute; it seems to build the longer it sits! A mature Champagne with many years of life left. Gorgeous. — 6 days ago

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. Tonight I have opened a beautiful 2011 Catherine & Pierre Breton Beaumont Chinon Cabernet Franc.

On the nose there is nice fruit strawberry, cherry, raspberry, green bell pepper, roasted red pepper, herbs and wet gravel.

On the palate the red fruit continues with strawberry, cherry, raspberry, green bell pepper, tomato, herbaceous and crushed gravel.

This wine is medium to full bodied that has a smooth fresh mouthfeel, medium to medium + acidity and med to medium + fine mouthcoating tannins that leaves you with a medium+ to long red fruit graphite finish. I am loving this Cab. Franc and is making this weekend more enjoyable. Please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. Super dry and powerful. Medium bodied but drinking like it’s (ballad of a) the thin man. Smoke/char in the nose. Upfront coffee/tobacco and raspberry flavors but little else. Not a good introductory Bordeaux for the masses. For those already smitten, I can see this going 40+ years but there will never be fat years. This is a (c)lean machine. This is really awesome. First, lemon cream and kiwi on the nose. The palate is linear at first but builds in volume. A quinine-like bitterness provides the bass note and the perception of sweetness and long acids play so well on top. Such precision. Pure Pinot. From 2014 vintage, 5gr/ltr dosage in Oct 2018, non filtered, 700 bottles only.
Tastes like a very fancy, lightly sparkling white burgundy, like a whole fancy French meal in fact. But doesn’t necessarily taste like Champagne, good enough for me not to care.
