Mas de Boislauzon

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2016

Decanted for a two hours before we got into this bottle and then consumed over the following three hours. This is one of the more unique producers from Chateauneuf du Pape as they are known to have the most prized and oldest Mourvèdre in the region. Initially, this had the funkiest aroma, almost that of a high school locker room. Thankfully, that blew off after about five minutes. What remained was a powerful, concentrated wine with a bouquet of red and blue fruits with garrigue and exotic spices. On the palate, red cherries and baked blueberries and an unmistakable kiss of black pepper. Very good acid and sneaky tannins; characteristic of the vintage. And while the 15% abv is kept fairly well in check, it does have a touch of heat on the finish. Fun to try one now but I expect this to show better after 2025. — 3 days ago

I’m a big fan of this producer’s CdRV. Those take some time to come around as well, in my experience.

Organic Les Baux-de-Provence Grenache Blend 2018

If you can get an organically grown wine from France to the US that is fresh and lively on the palate with no trace of funk, then kudos to you Madame Cartier and sons. This baby is all fruit: blueberry, black cherry, currants. Well worth a detour to southwestern France for this well-balanced blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet. — 2 days ago

Le Bon Coteaux du Languedoc Les Terrasses du Larzac Red Blend 2012

Very nice wine. Good value off the list at dear old Union square cafe, and a good pairing with a pork chop and chicken Milanese. Well balanced with some good punch, good acid on the finish, tannins well integrated. — 20 days ago

40th Vintage Mas La Plana Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Torres family has been related to wine since the 17th century. Aged in oak for 18 months (70% new). Dark Ruby with aromas of black and blue fruits and complex spice. On the palate this Spanish Cab shows blackberry, currant and ripe cherry flavors with eucalyptus, black pepper and herb spice, concentrated and complex with well integrated and structured tight yet smooth tannins. Long finish ending with vanilla, oak and earthy notes. Can enjoy not but will benefit from aging. — 4 days ago

Mas de Daumas Gassac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2017

Pure magic. The first impression is a field of lavender and wild herbs. Then, black currants, flowers, iron, musk and wet earth waft from the glass. A delicate sweetness balances the impression of freshly squeezed blackberries on the palate, and each sip ends with a brush of tannins and more lingering, echoing fruit. Elegant, mysterious, and achingly pretty. I was reluctant to open this so young but it’s already so exhilarating. The back label says “enjoy for its complex fruit character in the first five years, or from 7 to 25 years for its depth and complexity.” I intend to! — a month ago
