Vieilles Vignes St. Joseph Marsanne Roussanne Blend 2014

Lyle Fass
9.4

@Josh Morgenthau inspired me to open one of these and wanted to check in on one with age. Glad I did. Preposterous nose of huge granite, lemon, some tropical fruits and exotic flowers. Amazing lime and lemon drop. Focused and round nose with such lovely granitic precision. Bit of honey and tree bark. Palate is rich and energetic with wonderful edgy and granite driven Marsanne minerality. Excellent acid and freshness and uncommon depth. Great purity. What grip. Best white wine value in all of the N. Rhone. — 5 days ago

Poivre et Sol St. Joseph Syrah 2015

2015 vintage. The usual suspects in the nose with some violets and lavender in the follow-through. Plenty of white and black pepper in the lineup. Medium-bodied. A prettier Saint-Joseph. — 9 days ago

Punches above its already massive weight. Meaty. Purple-y, plummy stone fruit overtones. Wonderful. — 20 hours ago

@Timothy Eustis I gave it a 9.2. Definite bohunk with black pepper for days. Need to pick up some more. Would love to throw that into the Thanksgiving lineup.

Terroir de Granit St. Joseph Syrah 2018

Expressive nose of dark fruit and smoke. Medium bodied, with raspberry, violets, a hint of blood, blackberries and chocolate. Fresh acidity and good length. — a day ago

Estate Bottled Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 1995

Absolutely great aged Swan Pinot that goes great with wild King salmon off the grill, all I can say is #ItrustinRod to consistently make great, super ageable Pinot Noir from the Swan Estate grapes!! — a month ago

La Ferme des Sept Lunes Syrah 2019

We’ve had serious bottle variation with this producer but decided to take a chance. Fresh & juicy, beautiful fruit, tad reductive, big acidity, lovely with homemade pork rillettes. — 17 hours ago

Arbois Savagnin 2009

Raised under veil. Just shy of being a vin juane. A pinch of acetaldehyde goodness mixed with mild oxidative notes, but not totally sherryfied. All the nuts (walnut, hazelnut, almond) golden apple, and pear. Long finish with caramel, more nuts and a hint of petrol. Round, smooth and viscous. Surprisingly good pairing with souvlaki. — 13 days ago

@Peter van den Besselaar it was. A Bastille day / early birthday indulgence. The oxidative Savignin thing isn’t something I normally crave, but when it’s done well, it’s so savory, distinctive and wonderful!

Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2018

An absolutely wonderful St Joseph. Decanted 8+ hours which I’d recommend at this point. Very glad I have some more in storage to try in a few years. Inky dark, excellent dark fruit with some great olive / earth / pepper notes, great mouth feel, nice long finish, all comes together very well. Delicious. — 4 days ago

Saint-Joseph Vielles Vignes Syrah 2016

Another great wine from the master of Saint-Joseph with soaring aromatics that seem to leap from the glass showing lots of palate staining dark inky fruits along with notes of graphite, black olive, licorice, mineral, mocha & violet. — 5 days ago

Smokey bacon in droves. Savory and delicious. Long finish. Yum. I remember tasting at the Voge estate over 15 years ago, and these wines still blow my mind. — 4 days ago
