Tonight I couldn't wait for the October 23rd Champagne day I had to open a sparkling wine the Domaine de La Petite Roche from the Saumur of the Loire Valley. A blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Chardonnay.
On the nose there is green apple, peach, apricot, honeysuckle, marzipan, chamomile and a good mineral note.
On the palate I am getting lemon, lime, yellow apple, peach, apricot, a nutty not and brioche.
This sparkling wine is medium bodied with medium + acidity and a medium to + citrus minerality finish. Continue having a wonderful week and please stay healthy and safe. Nostrovia! 🥂🥂🥂🥂 — 2 days ago
WNH Chenin tasting with @Bill Bender , @Shawn R , @Eric LaMasters , @Mike R . Very solid and enjoyable single vineyard chenin with a bit of bottle age to it. I hardly drink any chenin, so while my experience is limited, I did a lot of research prior to this bottle and enjoyed it while open.
Initially, I had this too cold. Ripping acidity followed by overly tart lemon. After it sat open in the bottle an hour and got closer to room temp, it leaned toward an Alsatian Riesling type nose mixed with a Chablis like palate. It never went full limestone and petrol on the nose, but it got close...but then it went more waxy, honeysuckle, and powdered lemon bar. The longer it was open, the more reminiscent it became of the Moreau-Naudet Les Forets Chablis I had about a month ago. Extremely pure and underripe yellow orchard fruits, slightly chalky, high acidity, and beeswax toward the finish. I’d hold another 3-5yrs before the next bottle. — 22 days ago
Great food wine. Crisp, red fruited, sage and savory herbs. Bright acids. Delicious. — 10 days ago
Super aromas. Mesmerizing. Herbal, cassis, light cherry, mineral and so so lifting. Super complex and so transparent. Sweet fruit on the palate, so nimble, elegant and mineral. This just floats and has a Burgundian sensibility. So balanced and wowza pure. Ripe and super elegant tannins. Superb. Has more to say. — 9 days ago
Electric. So so electric. Floral, stones, minerals, some light white almond slices, wet rocks, so stoney. But pure and chiseled. Palate is terrific. Dense, chewy and my god the acid on this is majestic. Nimble and pure with such purity and length. Lemons are pretty much the only fruit but the minerals crush you. So elegant and textured, yet dynamic and massive. Really a wine of contrasts wherein the intrigue lies. What aromas. Best Roches Neuves white since 13 Clos Romans but this might be better. Thierry has always said ultimately this wine would be better than Clos Romans when the vines got old enough. I think 18 is first vintage where this is true. An unreal wine. — 24 days ago
Lustrous gold color. Exotic citrus-herb nose; Buddha’s hand, then orange peel and bay leaf as it opens. Meyer lemon and mineral on the palate, not much orchard fruit. Lovely acid, but very dry, one almost wants a few grams RS to give this some more volume and balance. Think this will be better with some more cellar time. — 16 days ago
Just concluded the annual Fall seclusion at our cabin in the Rangeley lakes region of Maine, mobile service up there is mostly non-existent, after several days I am posting again. Notes are somewhat brief, as my focus is relaxing and watching the Common Loons swimming and diving in the cove in front of our camp.
Nose has washed raspberries, sliced Clementine orange, peach skin and moist chalk.
Palate has dried orange, partially-dried cherry, peach skin and (minor) dried raspberry. Light acidity remains, our final bottle, this was a good run. — a month ago
