Castello di Monsanto

Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2019

Another vintage, another lovely Chianti Classico Riserva from Castello di Monsanto which continues to be a benchmark for wines from San Donato in Poggio. Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days and consistent over both. The 2019 Monsanto CCR pours a deep ruby color with a translucent core. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears and no signs of sediment. On the nose, baked mixed berries, dried green herbs, red carnations, dried gravely earth. On the palate, the wine is dry. Medium+ tannin and Medium+ acid. Confirming the notes on the nose. The finish is medium+. A lovely pairing with almost any red sauce dish. Drinking well now and I expect it will continue to do so through 2034. — 17 hours ago

Siepi Castello di Fonterutoli Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2020

Medium bodied equal blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. Has a nice sense of place. Dark cherries, roses, tea, graphite and interesting sour spicy notes like sumac. A fair level of polish here that really makes it shine. — a month ago

Il Poggio Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2006

After an encounter during a tasting some 7 years ago, I decided to bury my bottles way back in my cellar.
Today, this is an unusually dark, concentrated and brooding Chianti. Notes of scorched earth, graphite, dark fruit, ink, Aceto Balsamico, dried herbs and Cuban cigars dominante the nose. The palate is extremely well balanced and the finish long and rewarding, while high levels of ripe soft tannines and mellow acidity provide structure.
Magnificent.

Have a few of this buried as well. Sounds like it’s time to excavate.

Castello della Sala Cervaro della Sala Umbria Chardonnay Grechetto 2018

Zippy. Tart. Green apple. Grass and minerality. I like this because of the Grechetto addition to round out and put more pep in with the Chardonnay. — a month ago
