Silvanus Crianza Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2008

Jed
8.9

Medium ruby going garnet. Concentrated, slightly angular, chewy, full-bodied, older Tempranillo. Strawberry tart, dried fig and tobacco on a musky loam background with a whisper of smoke on the leathery finish. Very affordable real Ribera del Duero. — 7 years ago

Old Vines Viejas Viña Manso de Velasco Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

2004 | Cabernet Sauvignon
Miguel Torres, S.A.; Manso de Velasco VV
Curicó Valley, Chile
6H decant.

A truly great South American Cabernet, just give it lots of room to age and decant. No jammy stuff here, elegantly evolved dried red/purple fruits, dried sage and dry earth; plenty of leather and rehydrated cherry with a satisfying, long finish. Disappointingly our final 2004 bottle from a 3-pack buy in Nov. 2007 for $28/ea; value delivered and patience rewarded!

Old school bottle, so thick walled it could go to bat for any inning or bounce off the pavement without concern...

@Severn Goodwin — I did not know that Torres was making wine in Chile, I have very fond memories of drinking Torres Black Label Cabernet back in the day (1970, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978) — those were such incredible wines that lasted 15-20 years easily (and the earlier vintages used to have the Catalan name for Tempranillo in them, about 30%). Great Spanish wines!!

@Doug Powers Yup! I stick to the higher line bottles though. We've got a few other Cab vintages on either side of this vintage. I was always impressed by the good pricing.
