I don’t know how the weather is where you are but here in VIC it’s definitely starting to get cooler which has me checking out the red wine rack.
After 9 months of no red wine, this Windfall Wine Estate 2017 Ivor Reserve Merlot from WA’s Geographe wine region was the perfect re-introduction to the world of red wine - it was heaven!
A big thanks to Julie for this sample bottle. This was bottle number 2742 of the 2900 bottles produced.
It’s named after the current owner, Julie Hutton’s grandfather, Ivor Thomas Williams who purchased the Windfall property in 1949. Sadly Ivor passed away and much of the property was sold to pay the death duties.
Yet thanks to a lucky lotto win, Julie and hubby Phil purchased the River Block and were able to plant the vineyard in 1996. As they say, they ‘managed to turn a windfall into a way to work harder’. Running a vineyard is definitely no walk in a park guys!
In the glass it’s a delicious deep red shade with a ruby shine to it. Red berry fruit and sweet spice with some floral notes and charred fragrant wood come to mind when I give it a whiff. While in the mouth it’s literally an utter joy to drink. Think juicy cranberries and red berries with a lick of oak and a lovely lingering finish. $40 per bottle and will cellar well 👌

Western Australia’s Geographe wine region is less than a 2 hours drive south of Perth and is home to a number of fabulous wine producers including @windfall_wine_and_bonking_frog who specialise in Merlot 🍷

I recently received a #sample bottle of the Windfall Ivor Reserve 2014 Merlot which was released only last month (thank you Julie 😘). It has since snapped up a 96 point score from James Halliday and I can confirm that the TC taste buds thought it was pretty darn good too 👌

📝 My note: It’s a wonderful red-y brick shade in the glass. Violets, chocolate and a mixture of blueberry and raspberry notes rise up from the glass. While in the mouth it has a juicy vibrancy with flavours of fresh berries and vanillin oak standing out for me. Have you tried it yet? What did you think?

I visited Windfall (what was then known as Bonking Frog Wines) in 2015. Mr Spittoon and I actually did a day trip to a number of wineries which you can read about here: https://travellingcorkscrew.com.au/blog/day-trips-from-perth-geographe-wine-region/. It just goes to show what you can easily do in a day as long as you have a trusty skipper!
