A Southern 🌍🌏🌎 Hemisphere wine theme for a small dinner with a dear friend. Some older bottles from our cellar and some younger bottles from another cellar. Paired this evening with Asian-style braised beef short ribs (Kinderhook Farm; Valatie, NY) and grilled polenta.
Total departure from our our wine theme of the night, and I promise I'll do detailed notes on any of my next bottles, but needed a Riesling tonight...this hits all marks!

Greenish hued, lighter color than expected - impossibly complex aromatics after an initial musty basement / grandma’s attic nose. Elegant, balanced, finesse, graceful - only wee bit of RS, drier than expected - also not fat or thickened w/age. This was actually an age defying wonder. Thanks @Lyle Fass

Nose is tight. Gorgeous detailed fennel. Petrol, earthy and mineral. Other herbs. Apricot. Slowly unfurling. What a palate. So elegant. Super confectionary. Wow. Like cotton candy but also petrol and mineral. Mind boggling complexity. So juicy and precise. What energy. Amazing mid palate. Stunner.

Old school aged mosel Riesling. Some petrol on the nose. Green apple skin. Palate is green apples. But a hint of green apple jolly rancher a la willy Schaefer. Still beautifully vibrant. Complex. Wow.
I’m writing this on day 3. Needs a decant to hit peak Amazing.

See devious note: revisiting almost 3 yrs later: no more green, yellowish straw color & so much peach, apricot, cotton candy nose, luscious, great acidity still - has some zip leading to long dry finish. Fun w/Indian food. Still has more time if the cork holds out.

Nothing on earth like old mosel Riesling.
Nose is green apple. Green apple flower. So pretty. Absolutely gorgeous. As it opens you get like this aromatic of wind on the top of a mountain. The wind has grabbed aromatics from a field of herbs. Epic.
Palate is green apple. Mineral. Still so fresh. Like bring into an apple. Just a hint of age.
Finish is green apple skin.
Would guess 5 years old.
3 weeks in this is iconic. Just this green apple skin perfume. Ethereal. Screams MOSEL. Like green apple flowers. Like this petrol made of green apples that got stuck under the earth for 2000 years.
Palate is so perfect. Just perfect. So mosel. Green apple.mineral. Elegant.
