Trying this immediately after the Chateau Montelena shows the differences between Calistoga and Oak Knoll, with this being more vegetal and "harder" on the nose. There's less sweetness and more of a ripe character, and that transfers onto the palate as well, with a juicy bell pepper and underripe raspberry quality showing forth. It's a beautiful wine made in a masculine cabernet style.

This 2012 isn't showing as well as the 2011 at this stage. Tannins are still fierce. Needs time in bottle

Big, beefy nose of blackberries, currants, dried cranberry, and vegetal notes. Big on the palate as well, more blackberry and currants with dark cherry, cranberry, black tea, cherry cola, ripe strawberry, licorice, and cocoa. The oak is just right, I’m guessing mostly older American. Moderate plus tannins, acid, and alcohol. Quite chewy, getting brighter in the finish. Perfect match for our steaks.

Lovely velvet texture. So young with huge upside. Red fruit soft tannins and lingering aftertaste. Will improve for the next 10 years or more
