This chased the Chappellet, which was was a tough act to follow, But this Hess went toe-to-toe. And while it fell a shade short, at $23 per, it’s a winner. It presents superbly, and if you close your eyes, it’s tough to discern the difference. The Chappellet is slightly more extracted and dense, but beyond that, honors even. This is a case purchase. I’m going back to the well!

1 person found it helpfulOct 22nd, 2018Big and jammy, with a strong acid and study tannin on the finish. Despite having all of the elements right, the balance is off because it’s almost overwhelmingly sweet up front, then moves into a finish where the acid and tannin spike out.

May 26th, 2019Big, jammy fruit with nicely balanced tannins. Like a big, dark cherry pie. Finishes with nice blackberry and boysenberry hints to round it out.
