I've had friends ask me if Syrah and Shiraz are different grape varieties and the answer is no! They're simply different terms to explain the same wine. However saying that, typically those labelled Syrah are made in a more old world wine style - lighter and leaner. Whilst those wines labelled Shiraz are more fruit driven, intense and full-bodied.
This Sileni 2008 Syrah from the Hawkes Bay in NZ is a ruby red on the eye with aromas of cherries, dark choc, cassis and it has a slight whiff of smoky cigar. On the palate it has upfront cherry and raspberry flavours with a nip of vanilla and the smooth, silkiness of the wine covers the entire mouth. Totally enjoyable!
