Eben’s wines are always amazing. This was real tight & wound up upon open. This was leaps and bounds better on day 2. So much life left in this and just scratching the surface of what this can be.

Garnet edges with a ruby core. A bit funky on the nose with some cigar wraps, minerality, spices and damp tobacco. Medium tannins (5.5/10) with balanced acidity and medium to medium plus body. Dry palate with dried cherries, leather, stoniness throughout, damp forest floor and a bit metallic at the end. Medium plus to long finish. Will wait a few more years before trying again at least. (90+)

This weekend will have a world Rugby theme starting with this South African red followed by wines from New Zealand and Argentina. Sadly Australia having fallen to #7 ranked in the world did not feature :( A great combination of fruit and savoury characters. A lovely fragrant plummy earthy perfume. Nice minerality with blackberry and raspberry flavours on a medium weight palate. A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. A world class Shiraz Blend not showing its 14 years and still a good cellaring future. Tasted again 23 weeks later on 23rd March 2019 with consistent notes. Tasted final bottle on 8th March 2020 with consistent notes. Better and fresher a few years ago.

Great earthy nose, but rather tight and tangy at first. Was just beginning to soften up up after an hour, but by then it was sadly all gone,

Plummy aromas with an oak note to begin with. An 80/20 Syrah/Mourvèdre blend. Even @ 20% the Mourvèdre makes its presence felt with tarry raspberry notes coupled with the ripe plum and cranberry flavours. Great quality of fruit at harvest according to the owner and winemaker Eben Sadie. Good concentration but also well balanced with smooth tannins Love this style. One of the 1001 wines.

A stunner. A 2009 that still feels incredibly vibrant and can stand the rest of time for many more years. Dark and red fruits, cocoa, leather, dust. Best South African red I've ever had.
