Mar 2nd, 2024Christmas pairing with pistachio crusted rack of lamb. Near perfect. Lots to be thankful for.
This Geyserville is drinking great. Blackberry jam, sandalwood, coconut. An awesome ripe accompaniment to the gamey lamb.

Its been awhile since I’ve opened a Geyserville. This is the 2015 50th Anniversary. Young for me on this bottling. But, a decent first look. Still shows some astringency. This will age like a Cabernet if stored correctly. 70% Zinfandel, 15% Carignane, 12% Petite Syrah and 3% Alicante Bouschet. 14.5% ABV. Never opened a bad bottle of Ridge.
It is ready to drink but will improve over time. It will age 15 plus years stored correctly. Black raspberries, blackberries, plum, boysenberries, dark cherries, spice, nutmeg, cinnamon stick, vanillin, clay, dark chocolate, forest floor with dry leaves, caramel, malt balls, dry twig, light, soft pepper, dark, mid & purple florals for days-violets, excellent acidity and a pleasant wire to wire finish.
Excellent gourmet burger wine.

Very much still kicking, a good half decade after Mr. Draper’s suggested drinking window had elapsed (per the back label). Dried black and purple fruit, cedar, cocoa and roasted coffee

Jun 9th, 2023Hedonistic with blackberry and violet perfume. This is just ripe with a fresh, tangy edge. So bright; such herbal nuance. Real finesse and verve. Impressive; drinking at peak.

Sep 14th, 2022A blend of 68% Zinfandel, 20% Carignane, 10% Petite Sirah and 2% Alicante Bouschet. Deep Ruby, complex, yet delicate with aromas of dark fruits, spice and earthy notes. On the palate flavors of plum and cherry with smoky oak, pepper and cacao wrapped in generous acidity. Fine sweet tannins, long finish, great structure ending with fruit, cedar, spice and slight earthy tones. Nice!

Feb 8th, 2022Paul Draper’s note on the back label said this would be “at its best for the next 7-8 years” but I’m afraid he’s sold his wine a bit short. It’s still going strong after 2+ decades. Beautiful Zinfandel-driven blend with supple and ripe black fruit, smoke and vanilla spice

Jan 11th, 2022Good God, what a sensational wine is this 2016 Geyserville field blend from Ridge Vineyards, a predominant Zinfandel cuvée with 17% Carignane, 7% Petite Sirah, and 3% Alicante Bouschet.
Totally hedonistic, with perfectly ripe blackberry, cassis, rich dark chocolate and steeped plum, intertwined with crunchy gravel, toasted spices and a delightful sweet tobacco note. The palate is full bodied but elegant, powerful yet perfectly poised, replete with youthful vigour, with a lingering - and totally unapologetic - sweet vanilla perfume that completes what is an exceptionally harmonious mouthfeel. It’s the sort of wine you can’t stop sipping.
Ridge’s Geyserville holds a very special place in my heart. The 2000 was one of the first experiences that really sparked my love for wine as a young waiter around a decade ago. At ten or eleven years of age, that wine was truly memorable. I’ve been hooked on Zinfandel since, though I don’t drink nearly enough of it. This 2016 is the first Geyserville I’ve had for many years, and it has exceeded my high expectations. I cannot wait to try this in ten or fifteen years’ time.

This has been resting in my cellar since release and figured this might be ready to go on the pop and pour. I was wrong. Please don’t misunderstand, it’s a treat to drink, it’s just still very young. So much so, in fact, that it took three days to really begin stretching its legs. Well endowed with fruit, I wouldn’t try again for at least another couple of years. I expect it will probably drink very well for another 10-12 years.
