This mencia has personality! Blackberry, boysenberry, violets, loamy earth, touch of stemmy greenness. Slightly rustic but it all comes tog harmoniously - really like this wine

Popped and poured. Wet asphalt, dark cherry and purple flowers on the nose. Ripe bramble fruit, fine tannins, great acid. Long. Unbelievably fresh! Delicious on its own but even better with a meal. Out of this world QPR. Pérez truly is a wizard.

Dark yet fresh, vivid and bursting out of the glass with ripe sour cherry, violets and crushed rocks. A touch of reduction.
On the palate this is so fresh. Mid weight, juicy, crunchy tannins, juicy acidity. Chunky yet not rustic.
This has personality, loads of interesting edges, quite some depth and brilliant drinkability, esp. slightly chilled.
Brilliant value, too!

Dam that’s pretty serious wine for $24. 13.5% Old vine Mencia. Loamy mineral. Blackberry. Raspberry. Chalky tannin. Best enjoyed while screaming obscenities at the dumbass POTUS on TV. Yes I’m drinking at 3pm on a Tuesday.

Delicious smooth medium-light body, versatile food wine. Nice Pinot noir alternative.

Overrated. Not much nose or flavor. Muted. And kind of boring. Don’t see what everyone is so excited about. 17.98 at HT

Described to me as an easy drinker but with enough interest to chew over with grassy, herbal notes. I found this to be spot on. I was also told it's a grape usually used in blends, but put center stage here. That intrigued me. I really enjoyed it and hope i come by it again.

Love it!!!! Smokey bramble notes and charcuterie up front. Followed by plum, dusty earth, fig and cherry on the palate. Bright acidity and tannins balance out. 13.5%, amazing value.

McCarthy & Schiering, $21

Floral and dark fruit on the nose. Super complex, getting all different kinds of tasting notes with each sip. Blackberry, black cherry, wet sand, and a savory note that reminds me of herbs and olives and a touch of smokiness. The fruit is ripe but it still has a very bright acidity, maybe a touch too much for my tastes, smooth tannins and lingers on the palate for awhile - medium bodied. It may not be the best tasting wine I've ever had, but it is definitely one of the most refined and complex and was very enjoyable to drink!

Raul Perez Mencias are always full of perfumes and textures. Ultreia is fresh rose petals, lavender, red currants, and cinnamon. Spice and bite. Equally elegant and assertive.
