The 2020 Soave Classico wafts up with enticing notes of kiwi and sour melon contrasted by savory herbs. It’s deeply textural and round in feel, with a tart interplay of lemon and lime that’s nicely offset by a pleasant inner sweetness. There’s wonderful harmony here, as the 2020 tapers off with green botanicals and a flourish of minerality. This “entry-level” Soave Classico from Pieropan punches well above its price point. Since Pieropan makes three different bottlings, one from each tank, of their Soave, I thought it prudent to add the lot number for reference. (Lot# 26.10.21) (Eric Guido, Vinous, April 2022)

Easy drinking. Not too acidic. Pretty smooth.

Can’t go wrong with Italian grapes.

Blend of 85% Garganega & 15% Trebbiano di Soave, from the heart of Soave, the Winery of Leonildo and Teresita Pieropan dates back to 1860. Pale lemon with green edges and aromas of fresh stone fruits, floral blossoms and herb spice. On the palate apple and pineapple with lemon citrus juice notes. Well balanced with vivid acidity carrying through to a pleasing finish. Tasting a Sample.

La Rocca, made from 100% Garganega and aged for 15 months in large barrels. Bright lemon yellow with aromas of tropical fruits and oak notes, very rich and complex. On the palate apple, pear and orange zest with nutty flavors and lively acidity. Smooth and elegant the wine ends with oak, mineral notes and a bit of spice. Nice! Tasting Sample.

Pale lemon straw with green edges and aromas of stone fruits, floral blossoms and herb spice. On the palate apple and pineapple with lemon citrus notes. Well balanced with clean lively acidity carrying through to a pleasing finish. Very fresh, nice. Tasting Sample.

This vintage seems particularly vibrant and electric right now. Tart pear, white peach, lemon curd, honeydew melon and crushed rocks overlaying a texture that is both delicate and saturating on the palate. Lots of savory spice and almond character on the long finish. Highly recommended.

Medium lemon color with a nose redolent of apple, pear, blossom and spice. High but well-balanced acidity, medium body with a lanolin texture in the mouth (it’s 85% garganega and 15% trebbiano di Soave) and flavors of apple continuing on a long finish. Lovely, and a good value.
