My first Sagrantino! Well I experienced as it is being described. Dusty, dungeon earthy nose; intriguing. Dark red juicy fruit, tart, coarse tannins. No finesse, not really any layering or complexity. Just a hard hitting, juicy, tart wine. We had some aged white cheddar (Cougar Gold!) that was able to stand up to it and took the tartness down a few notches so the juice underneath became a little more exposed. Really didn’t get much better after a few hours in the decanter. It reminded me of a tart, red juicy Tannat. Final conclusion. Not for me. Afgekeurt! Couldn’t really understand how Decanter rated it with a 97 🤔. We are going to Umbria and the Montefalco region next month. I’ll give it another try at the birthplace of Sagrantino.
