Luyton Michéle
Saint-Joseph Red Rhone Blend
Utterly classic St. Jo. Reminds me of old school minor Pomerol. Outstanding.

A great vintage for this wine. Nose is rich and opulent with a huge granitic background. Also raspberry coulis, minerals, wet earth. some hay, herbs de Provence. Palate is just incredible. Deep, rich and ripe but all offset by an aggressive granite character. So deep, so juicy and so structured. The finish is a bit clipped but man does this have the guts to age 20 years. The most serious version yet. The depth is quite something. Chewy and toothsome. Wow. So long. A home run. Amazing finish. 9.49999+++

Jul 17th, 2022In a great place. Nose is confectionary with red currant spice cake, some blackberries, florals and nice granitic touch. Very refined. Palate is juicy, sleek and elegant. Ripe and juicy but so elegant and refined. The freshness here is remarkable. Great structure and granitic depth as this opens. Superb. Better than 18 from a few weeks ago.

Jan 15th, 2022Nose is a bit odd and reductive off the bat. Some good florals and earth under the funk but it needs to blow off. It takes 30 minutes and then it’s gorgeous. Palate is a whole other story. Olivey, and stoney with rich and darker berry fruits with tremendous depth and purity. Nose is starting to clean up but needs some air. Wild mint and huge garrigue now. Nose gets so pretty after 30 minutes. Palate is so rich and so stoney with noble structure, depth and tannins. So juicy and long. Tremendous wine.
Going from 9.4 to 9.3 after a few hours as the funk comes back on the nose to integrate but still be there. Not sure if this is the best bottle.

Black and green olives. Spice. Menthol. Huge berry fruit. Lovely granite. Palate is juicy and clean with awesome purity and freshness. Lovely granite crunch and such freshness. Very good concentration and energy. Good ripe tannins that lead me to believe this has 10 more years ahead of it. Old school and classic.

Apr 28th, 2020What an epic St. Joseph. This is almost at the level of her Hermitage these days. Just a stunning super expressive nose of mashed dark flowers, leather, earth, granite, deep cassis, blackberry, olive and just so nuanced and expressive. Palate is superb. Precise and textured with just awesome granite minerality and oodles of blackberry and cassis fruit but becomes cleansed with the granitic Snapback on the finish. Ripe and juicy with major structure and definition. Tannins are high quality and just so velvety and perfectly sweet and also mineral. HermitAge like tannins. The finish is so so long and just stunning. It gets to every nook and cranny of the palate. This is exceptional. So close to 9.5.

Feb 27th, 20202015 is so special. Gorgeous nose. Black olives, ripe black berry fruit, almost ooozng, hint of Brett, red fruits as well. Palate is ripe, juicy and large scaled for this normally more nimble St. Joseph. Complex, deep and very concentrated. Impressive purity and structure. Terrific freshness and length. Like many other 15’s this big boy needs 3-4 years but easily the best of 5 vintages I’ve worked with.

Jan 14th, 2018Listening to an acoustic Black Crowes performance of Girl From The North Country and drinking a still-tightly wound ‘15 Saint Joe. Nose is all black olive and intense crushed granite and graphite. Great acids make it fresh. Will update as it opens. Have hope - less than three months to go people.
UPDATE: As it opens, the nose and flavors don’t change a lot, but it becomes softer and more open.
