The 2016 Long Shadows ‘Saggi’ is the best bottling of this storied wine that I have tried since they began producing this wine more than a decade ago. The ‘Saggi’ is a thrilling blend of Sangiovese (Boushey and Candy Mountain Vineyards) with 29% Cabernet Sauvignon (Weinbau Vineyard) and the remainder Syrah (Den Hoed Dutchman and Bacchus Vineyards). The nose is drop-dead gorgeous with bacon fat, black olive tapenade, mocha and fennel. The stunning range of aromas bring you back to the glass for more. Revealing a silky texture and a wonderfully ripe mouthfeel, the ‘Saggi’ slowly unveils smoked pork shoulder, black tea, milk chocolate covered cherry and roasted fig flavors. Decadent, layered and downright delicious, this beautiful wine will enjoy an exceedingly long life in the cellar. If enjoying in its youth be sure to give this a two hour decant. Drink 2019-2033- 95

Super Tuscan blend. It's a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet and 10% Merlot. Nose of sweet & sour dark cherries. Baking spices, light spices, caramel, black licorice & fragrant dark, fresh, florals. It's not your traditional super Tuscan but it's a close relative. The mouthfeel is beautifully round, gorgeous, lush and sexy. Spice, baking spice, moist dark soil, dry powdery top soils, ruby, ripe, rich, lush, blackberries, dark cherries, spiced plum, cherries, strawberries, black licorice/cola with round. mouthwatering acidity. The structure, length, tension and balance are amazing as is the beautifully, lush finish. Photos of, their Walla Walla winery, wall artwork at their winery and hand blown stand up lamps.

Cracked the Ling Shadows box that I had been sitting on. This was delightful and well rounded. Sangiovese blend.

Gentle tannins, integrating the sanguine, can, and syrah beautifully. Rich black fruit and a hint of cherry, ending with a smooth spicy finish.

The second domestic Super Tuscan I tried this week. The first being David Arthur's Meritaggio. Hands down this is the choice. Also, typically my favorite release from Long Shadows each year. Sangiovese blend with Cabernet and Syrah. Dark, smokey with rich fruit and fine tannins. I'd let this one cellar a bit longer to catch its peak. Look at 2017 and beyond to allow it to really shine.

Blind tasting #1 - Sangiovese wasn't crossed off the list but consensus was Merlot. The wine in a blind tasting is always so humbling!
