A rare bottle captured at a great time in its evolution. Not youthful in any sense but not even close to mature. Quite a dark glowing yellow, lots of CO2 and light sediments. The decanter was necessary to open this beast up to a point where the wood and the richness of fruit could mask the ever so slight volatility which was front and center at first, compacting the aromatics. After a couple hours this turned up to 11. Dense, savory and deep aromatics and flavors, tropical tinged stone fruit, extravagantly concentrated, mixed tea and white cocoa, firm wood spice. Quite long, bright acidity but overall a soft and generous, regal, and which doesn’t so much remind me of Meursault Narvaux as it does something with a grand cru designation, but then again in the hands of Lalou, the wines often transcend the appellation.

When "more money than sense" collides with good timing- you walk in to make a long shot sales call and the somm (a Sonoma native) shows up with a bottle that was sent back because it was "over the hill". The result- you are gifted near perfection. Dried mango, green tobacco and autumn leaves after a rain (east coast-centric description). If only all Chardonnay could taste like this...
